Twice this occured in the last year, about 6 months apart. Many 'sparkling, different coloured lights' made the shape. Both times it started fairly small. It was static, I mean it didn't move when I moved my eyes. It slowly grew in size but stayed the same shape. After nearly an hour it cleared my vision range and disappeared from view. There was no pain or discomfort but I am a little concerned.... Has anyone else experienced similar or know what happened please? Thanks!!

Almost certainly a classic visual migraine.

No, they don't have to be associated with pain.
Was it associated with anything else?

There are a whole raft of symptoms that copme with migraine including severe headache, and nausea and vomiting.
Few people are unfortunate enough to have the whole set, so it's quite possible to miss out on the headache and sickness.

Off the top of me head:
"Warning" : Ill-defined, but many sufferes report that *something* lets them know that they are going to get a migraine before any real symptoms appear. Occasionally it can be feeling "too good".
Visual: the classic curved sparkly caterpillar, usually "C" shaped, that slowly drifts in the vision. Usually with a blind spot inside the "C". And or Or loss of vsion to one side of both eyes.
Olfactory illusion: smelling something that isn't there. (just as the eye is reporting light that isn't) In my case I get a "burnt caramel" smell.
Headache: often severe and one sided.
Nausea and sickness.
Super-sensitivity to sounds and or lights.
Tingling and or numbness on one side of the face or in one hand/arm
Brain misfunctions:
particular memory loss: odd items you may know perfectly, such as your favourite joke or a well-know telephone number may become totally inaccessible.
Syndrome: the brain can lock onto to one thought, and become unable to leave it alone.
Out-of-body-experiences:
For example sensation that "you" are not really in your body, but driving it rather like a remote control car.
Post migraine lassitude: feeling completely exhausted after the other symptoms (however few and slight) have gone.

I'm not sure that's the lot!
There's no simple blood test etc. for migraine, so people have to have at least three of the above for a reasonably sure diagnosis, and in the case of some of the symptoms more serious conditions may need to be eliminated as possibilities before "migraine" can be safely given as the cause.

It sounds like an 'aura' - which is a type of migraine. When it happens to me, it usually begins by getting blurry in my periphrial vision and might sometimes close in from there. I noticed that often times mine are triggered by different levels of light - for example, coming in from outside where it is bright and sunny to dimmer, artificial lights. My doctor said not to worry unless vision is blanked out completely OR it lasts for longer than a hour at a time. So far it has never lasted more than 30 minutes.

If it also has ziz zag shapes it is eye migraines. which will dissapear shortly, sometimes they can even take pat of your vision away. and your eyes don't hurt and you don't have a headache!, if it keeps happening get it checked out, don't play around, you only have 1 set. good luck, pat
