Digital is the evolution of film. obviously as people we want to create new things to make our lives more simple. the down side is that with digital you do lose the quality of film. no matter the size of mega pixel it will never be what film is. Digital has helped in more professional industries to help get photographic product to people quicker, but as a BFA photo major I will never give up my film cameras and still use them today. so to answer your question they do help the industry but for the fine artist it is really a matter of choice and preference but I am sure most will still use film. Check out Minnesota photographer Alec Soth who still shoots in large format and compare it to a digital and you will see the difference.

It has made everyone an "instant professional photographer" - at least in their eyes. Of course, nothing could be farther from the truth.

IMO, it has also spawned a glut of poor quality images being created.
