You should buy the biggest cage you can afford. The website below recommends no smaller than 15 X 10 inches. Just be sure that the bar are not more the 1/2 - 3/4 inch apart (so they can't slip out one you :) ).

Definitely go for the wire housing over an aquarium or plastic house. Better ventilation, plus if you get a wire cage that has horizontal bars hamsters love to climb up these and get some good exercise and mental stimulation out of it.

One that has multiple levels is a good bet.

The bigger the better. It should be, depending on the amount of hamsters, at least the size of a 10 gallon tank, but NEVER use an aquarium on rodents. The ammonia can give them serious health problems, you can google alot of info about this.

But since you plan to use a wire cage, you should be fine as long as it's cleaned out frequently.

Yes, almost all that CritterTrails, Habitrails and Rotastacks are too small for any hamster.
I would say at least 24x12 inch floorspace, as hamsters need also some stimulation and in smaller cages isn't space for running and toys (in lots of manufactered ones isn't more space than for a house, food dish and a wheel).

Moo G, Do you even know what you are talking about? The crittertrails (the cage of plastic) is airtight and to small. Go with a wired cage and be sure to buy a hide-a-way for your pet!

Bare minimum (for Syrian hamsters) is 12 x 18 inches, although bigger is definitely better. Most small cages on the market are fine for dwarfs (although again, they prefer larger cages).

they don't need a lot of room. I prefer an old aquarium because it's harder for them to escape. we used an old 10 gallon aquarium that leaked. just make sure the lid is on securely. they are real escape artists.
