Hi,If you are talking about "sleep" in his eyes use two cotton wool pads, wet them with warm water and then gentle wipe each eye with each one, this is what I do when my kitten has it.If it appears to be getting worse then take him to the vets because it could be something like an infection for which he'll need antibiotics.

Two viruses usually cause this. If it's the calci virus, you'll need a prescription cream from the vet to clear this up.

However if it's the herpes virus, you can fix it yourself. In the vitamin section of the grocery store you should be able to find a generic bottle of Lysine (also called L-Lysine, same thing). They run about $4 for a bottle of 60 pills that are 250 mg.

Crush the pill into powder with the back of a spoon. Sprinkle 250mg onto his food once a day for a week, then only three times the next week. The herpes virus bonds to this and the eyes will clear up in usually 3 days. We use this on our FIV guys when the eyes get runny. It also works on humans with cold sores, so it's a good thing to have.

There will be no side effects from the lysine for the cat, and a cat dose is 250-500mg a day so you're not overmedicating. If you don't see an improvement in a week, it's probably the calci virus and would need a tube of ointment from the vet.

The best way to get the "gunk" out of your cat's eyes is to get a warm wet washcloth and wipe it away gently. Get some moisturizing drops to put in its eyes and wipe it away again. repeat until its all gone. Visine has an artificial tears drops that works well.

I think it is an infection and you need to see a vet. You can wash it out with luke warm water with a little salt and a cotton wool, but if it does not get better, rather see a vet. My small kitties use to get the same but the mother sorted them out.

Take care

Warm water will work. As will a Q-tip. If it's an infection, try boric acid powder diluted in warm water. I have used this method before. But you don't use salt, that will burn and really irritate the eyes.

Use a warm wet facecloth but use the other end for the other eye so you don't get cross contamination. If it is runny then he may need eyedrops from the vet.

I would take a barely damp washcloth and wipe gently across his face in each direction.

Just wash your hands first, then gently wipe it away with your finger. That's what I do for my kitten.
