A war is long periods of routine with moments of intense activity.

IMO the thing that could best describe what it is like for the troops in Iraq is the movie 'Groundhog's Day.'

During my tour in Iraq my week was broken down into:

Laundry turn-in day
Malaria pill day
Laundry pick-up day
Non-kinetic impacts report due day
Laundry turn in day
Inspect the troop billets and common areas day
Laundry pick up day

Other than these events every day was identical. (Even the mortar and rocket attacks were 'routine.')

Media is probably the worst outlet to present the physical aspect of a war. Media is all opinion and is not physical, it is theoretical analysis.

I would say fire. Simple answer I know, and metaphoric, but fire is chaotic and hard to control. It can look beautiful from afar, and be painful up close. It also represents friction and change that happens too quickly. It clears out the old and allows the new to take hold. It can burn slow and steady for a long time, and then suddenly flare up, then back to slow steady burn.

The physical aspect of a War is, that we are human beings.
Just think the Fighting in the Pacific of them Islands, where the
fighting Man had no way of cleaning up for Month's! Not taking
their Uniforms of also for Month's, sleeping in them, that is horrible!
A War is a War, you only have to do it when you are at-tact, what
we are doing in Iraq is way out and should be stopped!

For front line soldiers, I've heard it characterised
as endless hours of bordom, and tedium, intersperced
with moments of sheer terror.

Pick up a copy of Full Metal Jacket at your video outlet.
Also, Saving Private Ryan.
Also if you can find it, "Redacted" Brian Depalma's L8est.

These movies are not suitable for children.
