All mature Christians go through spiritual dry spells, those "desert" times. What do you generally do when that happens? Wait them out? Or pray more? Talk to friends?

And when it's over, do you analyze why it happened in the first place? If so, what were your conclusions?

I think it's pretty much like a virus -- you just have to wait it out.

But praying and talking to people who understand what you're going through is always good, too.

Grab up the Bible, open it to you favorite Psalm but before you read it say a prayer. Don't pray for anything but to know the word of God, if you feel as if he is still far way. Repeat your prayer after read your favorite Psalm. Usual by third time I begin to feel his presence and the words become a live. My favorite is Psalm 121 but you may have a verse. I found this Psalm when my mother died and it has become part of the family's ideal. I could go on but when I catch myself doing what I said I would never do as a old man.

I've come to realize that when I least feel like going to Mass is when I most need to go; and when I begin to fill the periods of time usually spent in prayer with other things, I need to be in prayer twice as often as before. I try to persevere through the dryness without allowing such thoughts as "how long is this going to go on?" to intrude. God is eternal, and eternally good. In retrospect I have seen that my dry spells were good, too, for what I learned from them.

I am gentle with myself.....I realize I am more fragile than I thought and know that even though I may not understand God does. So I take my time.....pray, talk when I feel the necessity......then wait till I am moved to do what the Lord guides me to do. Go it on your own.....big mistake....the faster you go the behinder you get. God didn't leave you, he's there by your side waiting for you to return.

When it happens I do all of the above: wait it out, pray more, talk to friends and try to keep my spiritual chin up.

When it's over I always try to figure out what God is telling me. Most of the time it has to do with screwed-up priorities and pride.

Talk with friends, mostly. Pray a bit.

Sometimes I know exactly why, sometimes I don't.

I concluded that no matter what happens, always listen. Maybe I should say "listen."

Interesting question.

sometimes i feel disconnected spiritually, so i make a point of attending more events and it helps me reconnect. i usually only feel like that if i haven't been able to make it to ritual or other events in a while

hope you don't mind a pagan point of view, but we feel like that sometimes too : )
