I'm in a stage of my life, where I need to choose a career and stick to it!. I have been changing goals for so long that I have become a total mess.
I love to look after people. I like to give food and shelter to people who are in need. And I really like to make people feel safe and happy. I don't know whether this sounds crazy and immature!. But anyway another part of me loves a challenge, needs to be respected ( for my knowledge), and just have a stable career - therefore I was thinking of getting a career as a Humanitarian Aid Worker.
I don't know which to choose. I really want to be happy.
What do you consider when choosing a career?. And what if both these careers can make me happy?. How do I choose between the two?.

You can always work at one for pay and volunteer at the other. I've been doing that since I was 17 years old. You won't find a degree program as a nursing home worker or as a humantarian aid worker. You need to look at what types of workers agencies need.

If you choose a career in the health care field, you could spend time doing either.

If you choose a career in Social Work, you could work at either job.

A nutritionist could work at either.

A teacher/educator could work at either.

Try looking at websites where Nursing Homes and Humanitarian organizations list job openings, read the requirements for the jobs. This should give you some ideas. If all else fails, talk to a college counselor.

There isn't a need for you to choose one or the other. There is no reason why you can't do one now and another later in life, in fact, experience in one of these fields will look terrific on your CV when you decide to do the other. I work as a community worker, and one field can naturally lead to another. My work with people with brain injuries helped me get work as a youth worker with people with intelluctual disabilities which then led me to work with families dealing with mental health. Follow your heart, there are no hard and fast rules. However, if you want to be adventurous and see a new place, look up agancies/organisations that could place you overseas. I'm not sure about the US, but in Australia AusAid is a government run organisation that will find 2 year stints in developing countries. I'd recommend looking something like that up in your home country. There's always the peace corp as well. Good luck, I'm sure you'll make the right decision!

Both are very commendable and I applaud you for choosing this path.. Both are very much in need but both are very different as well the biggest difference is the long term outcome of your job as a nursing home worker, owner, or whatever your only goal is to help these people die... You do what you can to make their final years enjoyable and pain free but in the end your dealing with death. If that is something that you think you can handle than it is a wonderful place to be and much in need of caring souls who are not just looking for a paycheck. Too many nursing home employees are there only to pay the bills and it is evident in their care of the elderly. If you are lucky you may be able to change that. I worked in a nursing home but quite for hospice because it was tough and to many people didn't care.
On the other hand.. I am now living in Romania working as a humanitarian worker. I work with sick and abandoned children. There is a great need here to but in order to help hands on you need to make the sacrifices and get sponsors to help you pay for the bills so that you can move and do not have to work only help..You will make more sacrifices doing this kind of work but it too is hard. You are not dealing with death the same say but pain, poverty and suffering is sometimes harder. I am free if you would like to email me I would be glad to offer you some advice or directions either way. Good Luck

From what I have heard and experienced nursing homes are more about making money the care comes second.
