friend is taking a bus all the way from London to Berlin. How would that work? THe bus would be submerged under the sea for part of the journey?

Like cars, buses use the ferry or a train through the tunnel.
And as the bus companies use the connection that is cheapest for them that particular day, it can be any of the cross channel connections and even the ferry to Belgium or the Netherlands.
