Why do you have to fear him?
The Lord is my light and my salvation;
whom shall I fear?
The Lord is the stronghold of my life;
of whom shall I be afraid?
Psalm 27-1.
This verse also is a reputition of the same thing.
And I thought you said the Bible does not do this,
Funny how that works out huh?

okay, the bible is comprised of basically 4 books, by 4 authors, these 4 were chosen from over 40 books written, the rest were destroyed/suppressed because they seemed contradictory....but the 4 don't agree either, so it's really a moot point.....contradictions exist, most people ignore the contradictions...

That bible verse is not talking about not fearing God. You should fear God because he's powerful and if u have someone powerful by ur side, u won't fear any other things like devil, witches, principalities and power. If u read further,in verse 2, it will tell u more of those u should not fear because lord is ur light, salvation and stronghold.
If u read bible half way, u won't understand it.

Also, if u come along some repeating word in bible, it shows how power that word or sentence means.

Silly person!

Your parents loved you, but if you disobeyed, they could be fearsome. "Whom the LORD loves, he also chastises."

"The fear of the LORD is the beginning of wisdom." If you could get away with it would you hurt someone who had hurt you? If not, then even if you don't acknowledge Him you probably fear God.

As a fully devoted follower of Christ, I study the Bible. When in the course of my study, I find that my behavior displeases God I seek to change that behavior.

The funny thing is, that even when I didn't find anything wrong with what I was doing, I am happier and more at peace after the change. That means than what I was doing was bad for me even though I didn't realize it.

So God's rules are part of God's love for us. When we are in disobedience, we may feel that his laws are oppressive, but after conforming ourselves to his will we learn that they are just.

Read all the Bible. Read some every day. Ask God for wisdom and understanding and he will help you.

God loves you and I do, too.

Fear is not the same to be “scared” of God. We have no reason to be scared of Him. We have His promise that nothing can separate us from His love (Romans 8:38-39). We have His promise that He will never leave us or forsake us (Hebrews 13:5). Fearing God means having such a reverence for Him, that it has a great impact on the way we live our lives. The fear of God is respecting Him, for who He is and worshipping Him in awe.

the fear, is of respect to God.. and by the way, the verses you shared, i think you've misinterpreted them.. they're about the Lord being your light, salvation, and stronghold, who shall you be afraid of? that means, what should you be afraid of if you're in God? hehehe...

In the first place, we are God's creation so all our emotional reactions and faculties are designed by him. And these include the emotion of "fear". To a certain extent, "fear" is a good emotion since it causes us to flee or retreat from a dangerous or life-threatening situation. It allows us to preserve our lives. Thus, it is a wonderful gift from God.

Although I think the real sense and meaning of this word "fear' in the context of your question is nor really "fear per se" as when you react in fear when you are faced with, say, a venomous snake. It's more "reverence, awe, love, thanksgiving and praise" at the thought of HOW GREAT GOD IS.

But notice that the verses you mentioned do not refer to "fearing God" but to "not fearing anyone or anything" precisely because you have presumably entered into a positive relation with this awesome, almighty Creator God to the effect that he has become "your light and your salvation". In other words, as your "light" he brightens not only your DAY but your WAY. He has shown you the "colors" of life so that your days are filled with joy at the beauty you see around you. He also guides your steps to keep you from getting into trouble. And if you do make mistakes, or when he deliberately puts you into a challenging situation if only to train and strengthen you in the course of your handling of it, he himself makes sure that you are kept safe, since he is also your "salvation".

The same reasoning follows from your next passage, that God is the "stronghold of your life". If God is on your side and you are on his, you don't have to be afraid of anyone or anything. In a sense, life is a struggle, but if God is on your side and you are on his, you don't have to be afraid of anyone or anything.

The verses say therefore that given these benefits accruing from your relationship with him, IS THERE ANY REASON FOR YOU TO BE AFRAID? In fact, since fear is a negative emotion, these verses say that God wants to minimize if not entirely take away your experience of it. So that you enjoy life to the fullest!

Wow, thanks for asking this question. My reply is a good advice and reminder for myself as well!

Young "Warrior",
Our GOD is awesome. If HE is you light and salvation then there is NOTHING TO FEAR! CHRIST defeated satan in HIS Resurrection so that we have an opportunity to be in Heaven with them. Why do YOU scoff at the ones who would open the doors to escape eternal damnation? I do not understand that. Have a great weekend and a wonderful week.
Thanks,
Eds

YOU are reading this a little differently than I am.

We must fear him, Jesus warned us so!

Do not be afraid of those who kill the body but cannot kill the soul. Rather, be afraid of the One who can destroy both soul and body in hell. -Matthew 10:28

If the Lord is someone's stronghold, then what are the prerequisites of faith according to psalms and proverbs?

The fear of the LORD is the beginning of wisdom, and knowledge of the Holy One is understanding. -Proverbs 9:10

The Lord being your stronghold assumes that you fear God. What the "whom shall I fear" is referring to are enemies of God and yourself.

The verses you used talks about who should a person fear (of other people) if they have the protection of God.

In other verses you could of used it talks about a respectful fear. Like a loving child would fear his parents which would mean the child wouldn't want to do things that would cause upset out of love for mom and dad and would want to behave that is pleasing to them.

An insincere person could twist the word fear to make it sound ugly and that is their prerogative it just shows the person up as being just bad minded.
