Most important, make sure you have your medicines, if you use any prescription medicines, get a copy of the prescription as well as a medical declaration what the medicines are and that you need them including the chemical names of the medicines (has to be in English or Latin, so if your doctor has difficulties with that, ask him who to ask to get it done.) All your medicines should be in the original containers with the names of the medicines, your name, your doctors name and often also your apothecary.
Also take a prescription for your glasses if you have them.
Pasport, insurance papers, bank card, creditcard, driving license (and the international driving license, even when you do not intent to drive in the USA,) address book.
Camera with extra batteries, (loader if rechargeable) and extra memory card or at least one roll of film if you still use that.
Laptop computer if you own one, with all that comes with it.
Take clothes for a couple of weeks, some pairs of shoes, and maybe a raincoat. This is something you can easily buy in the USA but might be rather more expensive than you are used to.
(If you have business suits and expect some more formal days, bring at least one set with shoes and at least 2 sets of shirts, socks and underwear to go with it.)
If you use a different kind of plugs to the USA (very likely) get a set to adapt your electric and electronic things connected again in the USA, a travel store should have some, and the luggage stores at the airport can tell you what you need too, but do not wait till you are already underway.
Take a toilet bag with all things you will use (almost) daily, like soap, toothpaste, shampoo, brush and comb. Take enough of those for a month at least, if you use one brand only you might find it impossible to buy that brand in the USA.)
Take a second bag and use it for a small emergency kit, keep it simple and check that all over the counter medicines are allowed into the USA. In it you can also put the thing you only need rarely, like files and clippers for your nails and foot care tools, but only take them if they are small.
Hair dryer can be taken, but I think that this is something better bought in the USA if needed, as are tools like straighteners and curlers.
And take personal things like photos, music (a mp3 player or Ipod and if you can also some disks with your favorite music from home,) something personal to remind you of your loved ones like a cuddly toy or statuette, (if you are religious minded also something you can touch to do with your religion.)
For a stay of half a year you should bring as much as your luggage allowance (check with the airline how much you can take, checked and hand luggage.) But try not to take more than the allowance, as you will need to lug it around too, and suitcases get heavy very soon.

I was in Miami Florida in 2004, I suggest that you buy all basic necessities in Florida. Prices there are that too expensive especially if you will just purchase it in a grocery. Good luck! God bless!
