My husband recently started recruiting duty. Since we have been here, a couple other recruiters have mentioned getting housing vouchers, so it would be like we are in base housing, where rent & utilities will be paid for. We could not find a house for our bah so we are paying a lot out of pocket. The people who mentioned it have no idea how we find out more about it or apply or whatever we need to do. I have never heard of this but am hoping someone here has. Thank you for any help.

Thank you all very much. As far as why we can't find a home for our bah, my husband is on recruiting duty, we are nowhere near a base. We are in Ohio, near Cleveland, we have 2 kids, so we got a 3 bedroom home. If we were a couple without kids we could have got a place for about $300 less than bah, but we cannot fit a family of 4 in a 1 bedroom nor would we try! Bah is a wonderful thing but no it does not meet the housing costs in most places including here. We are in a very small place, in not the greatest area, it's not that we are spoiled or picky, bah just doesn't cut it.

I have heard of this program for personnel stationed nowhere near MFH, so I know it exists. Stop by the Forums on Military.com, we had someone who utilized this program, and maybe they can steer you in the right direction. Unfortunately I do not remember who exactly it was that did so.

I have never heard of housing vouchers, but I would suggest contacting housing or his supervisor. I do know that in some places, the military will have contract with certain landlords (usually larger apartment complexes) where the rent is paid directly to them and includes utilities..that could be what the other's are referring to.

As for the comment about the BAH...depending on his rank and where they live, it is totally possible (and probable in some areas) not to be able to find a place. This is especially true if the base or assignment is in/near a metropolitin area. The military does try to keep pace with housing costs and we are expected to pay some part of the cost, but in many cases the military housing allowance is not meeting the targeted 80% of the cost for living off base. We live in the DC area. The base (and therefor base housing) were in a failing school district. To move into a district that could serve both our kids (we do have a son with autism), we are using our entire BAH on rent alone. We are renting a town house, not a SFH. The average rent in our ares is $1800 a month. Electric bills average $450 (most heating and AC are electrical pumps), water is about $120. Those basic costs are well over what we get....and it isn't unusual.

All I can say is ask. Go to housing and see if they have an referrals to place as well. Good luck.

In 28 years, I've never heard of housing vouchers. We live in Miami where there isn't a real "base," but there is a housing contact. You should be able to get on military onesource and find some information on PPV housing or "set-aside" housing in your area. Basically those are apartment complexes and property management companies that have properties set aside to rent to military families at a reduced rate. If you chose a home outside of your BAH, you're responsible for your utilities. That's why BHA and BAS were combined a couple years back, so that its all one pool of money for you now.

The best place for this information is the Housing Office...or S1.

My question to you is....how come you can't seem to find a place to live that your BAH covers?
