I asked this because it seems that the migrant folks here seem to be better off then those of us who work full time jobs.

Legal immigrants are most often given the same treatment as citizens.
So the answer is (for my state of Ohio)
3 years of cash and food stamps, the cash you get will only pay 75% of your bills, but on the up side they will give you so much in food stamps you can afford to eat steak on a regular basis, at least until your electricity gets turned off and everything in the frig spoils.
After 3 years you won't get any cash at all and they will give you more food stamps.
Once you do get a job, they discontinue the cash payments and the food stamps in such a way that you aren't actually any better off until you are able to earn the equivalent of 2 full time minimum wage jobs.
Illegals aren't supposed to qualify for anything, not sure if they are really collecting or not in this state. (they probably are though for their US born children.)

If you or one of your children are citizens then you are eligible for welfare. If you or children are not citizens then you are eligible for nothing.
