it's the visible line where trees are and are not on a mountain. at a certain elevation they cannot grow so they just stop.

the border between alpine country and the forest,where the growths changes abruptly because of the frost ,
the regular trees wont grow any higher and the vegetation changes to alpine vegetation .grasses etc and small plants
