I work in a cold storage warehouse (50 degrees F) and it's very dusty in there. When we blow our noses, it's a bit black. Sorry if that grosses you out.

Anyway there's no asbestos or chemicals, except for dry ice. It's just thousand and thousands of chocolate boxes, pallets, and insulated boxes for shipping.

So is it harmful?

Thanks for the help so far, guys! It's definitely not the healthiest place in the world. No windows, no sunlight, no air purifiers... Just us, the boxes, and a heck of a lot of cold air coming from the fans.

Yes, it can be very harmful. If nothing else, you are setting yourself up for a dust mite allergy and taxing your immune system everyday you are at work. Breathing in dust and whatever else may be contained in the boxes and pallets could lead to a lifetime of COPD (chronic obstructive pulmonary disease). Expelling black goop from your nose is your body's way of saying it is time for you to look for a new job.

It shouldn't be too harmful if you inhale through your nose, since most of the dust should get filtered by the... eh... hair. When that happens, just blow your nose. If you inhale it through your mouth, though, there isn't really anything to keep the dust out. The cilia in your lungs should eventually filter out any dust that gets in (which comes out in your mucus), so it shouldn't cause too much harm, but I'd advise you to try to inhale more through your nose and exhale through your mouth. Otherwise you'll end up with a lot of mucus, and if there's harmful bacteria in the air with the dust (which there generally is), you have a higher chance of getting sick and/or getting respiratory problems.

Its almost certainly harmful to you, especially if you do it for a long time. Its just a matter of degree. If you were allergic you would be in serious trouble. Try a simple paper mask and if that doesn't work you could get a respirator but that may be overkill.

I wouldn't say that it is harmful. Yet, if you are worried it never hurts to wear a respirator. It might be uncomfortable, but it you might not be blowing your nose and it being a bit black :-)

If you're allergic to it, then yes. If not, I don't think it can affect you.

I'm allergic to dust and if I'm around it for too long, it triggers an asthma attack.
