Bismarck was commissioned in 1940, Yamato in late 1941. Bismarck was actually lost 8 months before Yamato was commissioned, but this is a hypothetical question, so that's okay.
Bismarck was faster, Yamato was bigger and had bigger guns.
Okay armchair admirals. Open sea, ship versus ship. Who winds up on the bottom of the ocean?

Yamato has the advantage, being bigger, having larger guns, and being more heavily armored.
But Bismarck is a formidable opponent. She is faster and her smaller guns probably have a higher rate of fire. She is also more maneuverable.
Both Yamato and Bismarck absorbed an incredible amount of punishment before sinking. Bismarck was sunk by British battleships and cruisers with guns ranging from 8 inch up to 16 inch.
Yamato was, of course, sunk by carrier-based aircraft. using conventional high-explosive bombs.
So Bismarck could win if she could turn her strengths into an advantage, these being speed, maneuverability, and possible gunnery advantages.

The Bismarck would be sunk within 30 minutes of the start of the engagement, but the Yamato would be damaged and listing from several hits amidships, with her steering gear damaged. Meanwhile, the USS Washington appears and the scene and scores a direct hit on Yamato's aft magazine, completely destroying her

The Yamato was far more heavily armored than the Bismarck, but the biggest deal would be that the Yamato had 18.1" guns with a 25 mile range, and the Bismarck had 14" guns with a 22 mile range. The Yamato would only have to stay outside of the Bismarck's range and pound it until it went down. The Yamato, unless its captain was a complete idiot, would need never take a hit as he would have a 3 MILE window of opportunity where he could hit Bismarck but Bismarck couldn't even range him!
Hope that this answers your question, and that you have a great day.

Yamato the Bismarck had guns so big it could take out the Bismarck in a couple of shots the main guns of the Yamato were at least twice as big as the Bismarck and the Yamato has lot more armor
how ever realistically if they had support of their country's support in the conflict then the Bismarck could have used U-boats as back up but the Yamato had air craft I still think the Yamato would win

If Yamato was able to hit and sink destoyers, I don't see how a heavy and big battleship like Bismarck can evade projectiles. Rate of fire is useless unless you can hit your target on range. Seriously, in a one-on-one match? Bismarck would be a sunken metal trash and coffin before it can even fire one of its guns. Bismarck was stopped by a ship with some aid of aircraft. However, no ship was able to withstand Yamato and therefore have to be fully dealt with aircraft. If the Kraken was not fiction, there is only one thing it would fear... YAMATO!!!

Bismarck' was armored against 18 " shells. Bismarck's rate of fire is double that of Yamato. Bismarck has a 6 knot speed advantage and better waterline and plunging fire armor. Bismarck sinks Yamato in less than 2 hours.

Well I would put my Dollars, Or Yen or Reichsmark, In the time on Yamato, It Supposedly can fire the shells across the horizon, Assuming the Bismarck had smaller Guns, It would have had to get closer to Fire back, And Fortunately for the Americans in Leyte, They did manage to bluff with so much planes "Stinging like a Bee on a Bear". RIP the "too brave" Destroyer Captains that stalled the Yamato.

Yamato - much heavier guns, much longer range. Even if the Bismark closed to within gun range without being hit, it would still be pounded in a battle of broadsides. The Yamato also had better armor on the upper deck.

Die Bismark! The extremely accurate German guns would have sunk the Yamato the second it came into range. How could the Bismark miss such a big ship when it could hit the little ship the Hood with no problem?
