Hi. I'm a 21 year old female and I have PCOS. I drink more than 160 oz of liquids a day and I'm always thirsty. Also, I go to the bathroom 15+ times a day. I don't drink soda at all and I'm a vegan. I'm also always tired. I sleep 9+ hrs a night and can barely get out of bed in the morning. I'm also very tired during the day and can barely concentrate at work. I take a vitamin and I know my iron is fine because I donate blood regularly. Help... What's the matter with me???

Vitamin B12 deficiency !! No matter how much iron you ingest, if you are deficient in B12 then you will not absorb the iron ............. eat more foods rich in this vitamin ie: organ meats such as lambs fry and kidneys, skimmed milks, cheese, fish and eggs.

If you are vegetarian then supplementation with a multi B complex supplement including all the B's - B1, B2, B3, B5, B6 and B12 - is really important.

Symptoms of B vitamin deficiency are fatigue and exhaustion, headaches and migraines, nausea and vomiting, excessive sweating, irritability and moodiness, inability to think clearly, dizzy spells, loss of balance, insomnia, constipation, tingling and numbing and prickling sensations in the outer extremities and even chest pains and heart palpitations !! Pretty scary hey? particularly if you don't realise the vitamin factor.

As the B complex of vitamins is a water soluble group our bodies can neither store or produce them so we need to ingest them on a daily basis or suffer from the side affects as you are now .............. GOOD LUCK

CHEERS

**EDIT**** Oops !! nearly forgot, the excessive thirst is due to Vitamin B6 deficiency, possibly due to hormone replacement tablets, tricyclic antidepressant medication or excessive alcohol consumption which will all make you deficient in B vitamins ....................... :0)

The multi B complex vitamin you buy will have B6 (pyridoxine) in it so they should make you happy as larry in no time !!

****EDIT**** The B vitamins are a water soluble group and therefore our bodies will simply use what it needs at the time and excrete the excess. Therefore, if we are under extra stress at any time we need to constantly take more B vitamins as this is what our bodies are screaming out for when we suffer from symptoms such as yours. You can't overdose on B vitamins as they are water soluble and the excess simply gets excreted. So, if you are doing a stressfull job, have relationship dramas, extra study loads at school then you really do need to take extra B tablets daily ...... I've got three littlies and a workaholic hubby and most days are so demanding for me that I need to take 6 multi B complex tablets just to feel normal !! Try it sweetie, you don't need to be suffering like this............. I swear you are vitamin B6 deficient - excessive thirst -- which would therefore mean no amount of B12 you ingest would be assimilated as B6 is needed for proper B12 absorption, which would therefore make you Iron deficient as Iron needs ample supply of B12 for assimilation !! ...... :0)

You need to go see your doctor right away. My wife is type 1 diabetic, and this is the classic symtoms of pre diabeties. This may or may not be what it is, but from how you explain it everyone we know with diabeties has had the same story. The doctor will have you fast, and then will take a blood sugar tests, and other tests as well.

Ask your doctor diabeties is very serious.

You could have anemia despite iron if your B12 and/or folate are low, as can happen with vegans. Also, you could be diabetic. See your doctor.
