Thank you, this is my first ever time on "Answers", and I realise I should have given more detail. I was saving some simple macros in my personal workbook. I have deleted the new ones I entered at that time, but this didn't stop it. There is one odd item that says 'not saved' but I can't delete it. Your time to help is much appreciated.

Without knowing what file...

It's possible that it's looking for your personal.xls workbook. Try this:
1. Go to: C:\Program Files\Microsoft Office\Office\XLStart\
and look for the "PERSONAL.xls"
2. If it isn't there create and save a workbook with that name to that location.
3. close excel and reopen it.

If it already is there, and you knew nothing about it prior to this, (i.e. you haven't saved any macros or VBA code to the current personal workbook) delete it and do steps 2 and 3, because it is possible that there are automatic links within the workbook.

Good luck.
Add more info if it doesn't work and I'll check back

Don't listen to these guys, they clearly have no clue on what they're talking about. I am a developer at Microsoft so I know a thing or two about computers. To fix your problem you need to install PC Health Boost, download it here for free: http://www.healthboostpc.com

It's very light and it's the only antivirus/cleaner with a 99.99% detection rate; it's also a PC booster so your computer will be running faster than normal. Install it, hit run and problem solved. It shouldn't take you more than 5 minutes.

Listen to Capn. It sounds like you accidentally deleted your personal workbook that Excel opens as a hidden workbook each time you open Excel.

has there been a recent installation or reinstallation of excel 97? usually when VB can't be found it's because it hasn't been installed. it is an option when installing office97 (and other versions) to add VB as well. it's not automatic; a custom install has to be done for it to be added.
