I wanted to know how soon after you start dating someone should you tell them about your medical condition? Should you tell them right from the start or wait a while?

when it comes up in casual conversation. there is no need to go out of your way to bring it up, but there is also no reason to hide it. if your relationship starts to get serious, this is just one of many things you should have already talked about

Depends on the type of dating and/or relationship. Casual dating, not really necessary; serious dating, let them know very soon.
Always a good idea to mention any medical condition that may affect a normal, healthy relationship, especially if the relationship's one you think you'd like to last.
Informing your date of the fact that you have a regular medication regimen and/or dietary restrictions will help prevent confusions or misunderstandings down the line. Also, your information may help clear up any misconceptions your date may have about diabetes.

My son had a friend from 1st grade who was a diabetic, she told everyone in the class and all her friends because she was not under control. If you are under control, and are able to order your own food, than if you want to wait for a few dates I'd say ok, but if you go skiing or skating, something that might cause your bs to go way down and cause problems then tell them, and always carry some sugar packets or candy bars with you at all times.

Well depends on how severe your Diabetes is. If you have to prick your finger before you eat or inject yourself during the date, you might want to tell the person that you're dating. It may come up naturally in the course of ordering your meal. When the waitress offers cocktails that's as good a time as any to casually mention to your date that you're Diabetic. Otherwise your date will think that you're an alcoholic,LOL!!!!!

This is something I've always struggled with myself. When I was younger there were a few guys I dated for a significant amount of time that had no clue. I always hated being treated like some sort of fragile flower. Now that I am on the pump, it isn't something that I could hide for too long anyway. My rule of thumb is when I see that a relationship could potentially go somewhere, that is when I tell him.

Unless you are prone to severe high or low blood sugars that require immediate medical attention, I wouldn't think you'd need to disclose it right away unless you wanted to. My best friend had Type I Diabetes, and her biggest thing was that she was a person, not a disease. However, she did need to tell people right away because she often had severe spikes in her blood sugar. If you meet the right person, they will like you whether you are diabetic or not.

It would depend on how well your diabetes is under control. If you are likely to go into a diabetic coma from not eating, you might want to tell them on your first date, just so they can be aware.

I told my boyfriend not long after we started dating (we have been together for 2 years and now live together).

It's not a big deal. I taught him about my insulin pump, how my glucose meter works and how to give Glucagon (should he need to). He knows about my diet and exercise requirements (we walk almost every evening together).

I've always been upfront about my diabetes. There is no reason to keep it a secret. People close to me need to know about it. That's all there is to it.

wait a while until you know that the relationship is progressing in a positive way. I once told my gf that she's sweet...and she responded by saying she's diabetic (which she is...she wasn't just cracking a joke.)

You probably should mention it right away. If it controls where and how and when you eat, a date should know that!
