Blood pressure measurements don't count for anything if you've been walking around. Ideally, you should be sitting down for at least 5 minutes or so. Blood pressure also can vary during the day, so it's best to get measurements from similar times during the day. No caffeine in the morning either. These measurements should be repeated on a few separate occasions. Some people get "white coat hypertension" when they go to the doctor's office because they are nervous. Probably blood pressure medicines wouldn't kill you. But you don't necessarily need blood pressure medicines if your blood pressure is only high while active. When doctors study the effects of high blood pressure, they study the effects of people who are diagnosed with it as described above. You are probably at no higher cardiac risk from your blood pressure.

The only things in diet to really watch for blood pressure are sodium intake and caffeine intake. Sodium makes you retain fluids which increases BP and caffeine is a stimulant that increases BP. So limit to one cup of coffee and either one soft drink or none if possible.
Prepared foods, like frozen entrees and a lot of soups and canned veggies are high in sodium, so you just have to pay attention to the list of ingredients on what you buy. My general rule of thumb is I eat 3 meals/day so I don't want more than 33% of my daily sodium intake to be from one meal. It can be a little frustrating, but of course, the alternative is to take pills the rest of my life.
Garlic supplements also lower BP.
Does he understand the consequences of untreated hypertension - kidney failure, bad eyes, myocardial infarction, stroke, etc? Tell him 30% of first heart attacks are FATAL.

There isn't food that can lower blood pressure. But there is foods that he can avoid (like salty foods) to keep his blood pressure from getting worse...It is very important for you to let you father know that high blood pressure is chronic disease that needs to be taken care of. To prevent later problem such as heart failure, kidney problems or stroke. And it maybe worse if he has comorbid conditions like diabetes and coronary artery disease (high cholesterol levels)..try to explain that if he doesnt treat his high blood pressure..its like a pump (heart) working against a pipe that is clogged up..the body will notice the lack of perfusion of blood to vital organs..then it will further increase the work on the heart to get the blood where it suppose to be...but the fact is the body doesnt know that there is pressure there..thus the heart becomes a workout muscle that gets bigger and bigger leading to a big heart that makes it hard to pump.=heart failure.
It is really not that bad to take medications..there are generics out there...that arent that expensive..there are some side effects depending on which one he takes...but usually are dizzyness... which is not that bad...trust me...he needs to take care of himself...to prevent anything from getting worse later..=)..hope this helps..good luck

While it’s true that reducing blood pressure will require you to incorporate some lifestyle changes, you can make some changes without affecting your daily existence, and they may be sufficient to free you from having to rely on prescription blood pressure medication.
1. If you are a smoker, stop.
2. If you have to lose some pounds, do it;
3. If you love salty snack, cut it down.
4. If you experience very stressful situation in your life, try to eliminate it
5. If you use alcohol to control stress, restrict its use.

I had a very high blood pressure and i was on coreg.I stopped taken them because they interfered with my sex drive.So I picked up natural cure books and found that 2 table spoons of apple cider vinegar in a glass of distilled water and 2000mg garlic pills a day brought it back down to normal.
