what effects does the changing of vaginal pH have on a woman...does any sti arise from this situation? also, could someone elaborate on the issue of vaginal pH, and the differences between whats normal and not normal? thanks

Well, in one respect, a change in vaginal pH should not bring on a sexually transmitted infeciton because those infectios are *sexually transmitted*.

However, that's just picking at semantics. Having vagina pH fluctuations *can* aggravate some infections and conditions (some transmitted by sex, others are not).

The vagina should be around pH 5.5. It is somewhat acidic.

If you throw off this balance, you can develop bacterial vaginosis. BV is generally not a STD, but it can be aggravated by sex.

Do **NOT** use a vaginal douche to try to clean your vagina or "restore" its pH balance. you will only cause yourself more harm. Vaginal douches can lead to pelvic inflammatory disease by aggravating infections and pushing them further up the reproductive tract.
