Just wanted to share some of my favorite reasons for why it's okay to torture animals and eat them.
*God said so. (Since he was right when it came to owning slaves and denying women the vote, he must be the ultimate moral authority on this too!)
*They were put here for us to eat. (So I could say you were put here for me to butt rape and it'd be all good? Yay!)
*Animals kill each other all the time in the wild for survival. (Because of course, this is somehow comparable to the practices of modern factory farming.)
*Vegetarian lifestyles are unhealthy. (If you ignore the millions of people who have been vegetarian since birth outliving our fast-food gorging nation and the millions of obese carnivores fighting diabetes and heart disease, I suppose.)
*Where do you get your protein? (These people really think protein is more prevalent in Big Macs than in vegetables and fruits! Way to research!)
*MM! Burger! (No comment. Just pity.)
Any veg(etari)ans want to share your favorites?

Chef Nasty (?) You probably don't hear these lame excuses because you're a meat eater, no?
Your brilliant supposition that eating plants violates vegetarian philosophy is actually on Michael's list, I think. But in case you haven't looked, I'll break this one down for you: animals are sentient and feel pain and emotion. Plants don't. I would say "nice try"...but it wasn't. Thanks for demonstrating my point, though!

Ghostshark1..... Yes, if you know the details involved in the meat and dairy industries, and you continue to eat meat, how can you possibly claim to "give a **** about animals"? Am I missing something?

You see, skully, a rational person would have realized the implication in my question- that the meat industries DO torture animals, and thus anyone who supports them supports their practices. Maybe you should check it out?

Others are:
How can you do that when people are homeless?
We are harming the meat industry and people will those their jobs.
We are ungrateful by refusing perfectly good food.
Vegetarianism is a mental illness.
We just do it because we think it's cool or trendy.
We are all children and no adults are vegetarian.
We don't have real jobs and we would eat meat if we did.
My grandpa ate meat and lived to be 100.
The "I knew a vegetarian once who did something bad" approach--"I knew a vegetarian who abandoned her children" etc.
The "totally irrelevant health problem somebody once had" approach like "I knew a vegetarian who had herpes, I bet she wouldn't have had it if she wasn't vegetarian."
To Skully: Yes it is silly and compulsive but it's amusing to some of us because we get asked the same things so many times here. If you have a problem with that, you can give answers in other sections. If you don't want to hear about Star Trek, don't come to the Star Trek convention. I have a friend who is into Civil War reenactment; I think it's dumb so I don't go.

Most of my "favorites" have been listed...I don't think the meat eaters answering your question are really getting the point. You are NOT trying to force YOUR views I think you are trying to show how other keep voicing their views in V & V. This is in the food & drink section for god sakes. We are just trying to learn from one another and because Billy Bob from Arkansas likes to eat dead animals and we don't...we must be crazy.
I would have to say my favorite rant is the "being a veg is not healthy at all". It's kind of hard not to be healthy when you follow a vegetarain/vegan diet. I would really like if these people that like to harass the V & V section would at least attempt to do some research before the makeing these statements. Everyone knows it is not healthy to eat fast food or eat read meat. That is not something PETA made up people! COME ON!!!!! Do some research!
Added: I am a vegetarian that really does not support PETA. I think they started out as a great organization however these days it just seems like forum for more celebrities to stand on. I visted the PETA site a few months ago and the 1st thing I saw were celebrites. Not a big fan of that kind of stuff. Wow you were in baywatch...if you don't eat meat I won't either. I think they have lost the idea that staretd PETA.

A response to Thrudheim's answer:
Obviously, in order to grow "our food" (as if meat eaters didn't also eat vegetables), land must be cleared and that can lead to the deaths of animals. However, as most of us already know, most of the world's grain and soy crops (and a few others) are grown specifically for use in animal agriculture. So why do you want to criticize us for *possibly* contributing to a minute amount of animal harm when it is your population which pays, directly and indirectly, for animals to be tortured and killed on your behalf on a mass scale? What have YOU done?
Besides, I'm not sure why you're ranting about our "moral high ground" when the point of the question was simply to share silly anti-veg cliches with fellow vegetarians and vegans. This question was not directed to you or about you, so there's no need for you to get all worked up about it.

I dont force my views on others but it's amazing how many people sit and try to convince you that ur reasoning is flawed for not eating meat. So it's fun that the tables are turned in this post.
I swear everytime I goto a party, and it's buffet style I brace myself. The woman goes " WHAT? NO MEAT! " You skinny little thing here have some you dont need to worry about gaining weight and stuff! Thats whats wrong with these young girls" ( as if my purpose for being a vegetarian is strictly to remain small). Of course everyone in the line hear's this and start to ask questions and try to convince me that meat is better than vegetables.
I think its ok for one sarcastic post. just one ;)

My arguments for vegetarianism:
It's a common misconception that vegetarians live to force their eating habits on meat eaters. It's just not true. I don't eat meat because I don't like it and I don't like the way animals are treated. I also believe that food that it used to feed livestock should be given to hungry people instead.
One person can make a difference. I have been made fun of my meat-eaters in the cafeteria but I am still respectful. I have never really enjoyed meat either. By the way God does not approve of torturing animals, get your facts straight. God gave us dominion over them not the freedom to inhumanely slaughter them. God also does and did not approve of slavery. Also animals in the beginning did not kill each other, that is wrong too. I believe that it is my right not to eat meat and it is morally incorrect for myself to do so.
Vegetarianism is never "unhealthy" unless you have a sever deficiency or something.
I hate it when people use God. God does not want his creation to suffer and die in horrific ways, that inculdes animals.
Plus vegetarianism never hurt anyone! Why criticize my harmless eating habits? Good question.

Blimey! Another rant from someone who has clearly been surrounded by braindead muppets all her life Get a grip dear and stop being so angry and vitriolic about us meat-eaters. I may be wrong, but I'm assuming you live in the States? I'm in the UK and although we don't have the endemic obesity problem that the US has, us "obese carnivores" don't live on Big Macs. Perish the thought. That's for stupid, lazy people - obviously plenty of those where you come from. People are brought up on whatever their parents feed them, and yes, some choose to become vegetarians at a later stage, but not all of us. Does that make us carnivorous monsters who don't give a **** about animals. I think not. The vast majority of farming methods in the UK are amongst the most humane in the world and I, for one, will never give up eating meat and, even if I did consider it at a later stage, I'd need a bloody more intelligent and thought-provoking reason than yours to convince me to become vegetarian.

What if you don't torture the animals, just eat them?
I rarely get meat from the store, I have farmers that I get it from, or I go get it myself. (deer, wild turkey)
I do appreciate every time I come in here the fact that some vegan is preaching their high and mighty stance on animals. By your very human existence, you manipulate, torture and KILL animals for the goods, products and services you use, regardless of how much you try not to.

Well dear, the mere asking of your questions shows veggie-head reasoning: There is nothing in what you or any other veggie-head lists that indicates it is "OK" to "torture" animals.
You see, dear -- Using loaded and outrageous words unsupported by the texts you submit as evidence does support that in the States and UK as well, the veggie-heads really are immature and undisciplined thinkers only interested in advancing an agenda as opposed to true vegetarians and true vegans one encounters in other cultures. Those I truly respect for their convictions and acumen in intelligently articulating their choice without rants and silly stuff like you and others have written..
Furthermore, why would anyone, save all the cliche's used by meateaters? Quite compulsive you know. Rather silly you know.

Wow, you really have nothing better to do than tout your supposed superiority to the people on yahoo answers?
I've actually never heard any of those reasons.
I am however curious as to how you can place more importance on one organism over another. By simply saying "vegetables don't feel pain," doesn't negate the fact that you're taking a life. these vegetables are "grown" just for eating. you act as If you somehow went out and picked them in the wild.
You're "Carnivorous "reasoning"" is lame. It'd be better if you actually posted a "reasoning" and argument against it that didn't sound as though it were said by a school child.
Edit: Wow, that is hilarious, since you just made yourself look even more like a twit. Still learning how to read? Maybe you should read what I said again, particularly the response to the excuse that I predicted you'd give. "vegetables don't feel pain."
