My mom has cronic cough and when they did an X-ray they reported pneumonia in the right lung with "patchy nodule infiltrates" the the left lung? My mom is a 40 year old non smoker but I am very worried about the "patchy nodules" because I read that 30% of them are malignant and that the 5 year survival rate of lung cancer is only 15%. I am absolutely freaking out and would really appreciate some information. Could the nodules be due to the pneumonia or could this be cancer?

I am not sure this is not my field but I do know that if they are like swollen lymph nodes in the lungs, those are mostly benign. I would advise her to do all required testing ASAP! I will put her and you on my prayer list. Also 70% of the time (according to your research) they are benign. I would focus on this right now. It may just be something that will clear up when the pneumonia is gone. Best wishes!

You need to see a 3rd doctor for an opinion...I would choose another lung specialist...who can get the biopsy records and determine whether they are inconclusive. If they are, then another biopsy may be scheduled to go for a better tissue sample. The sample should be evaluated by a pathologist for the presence of cancer cells. Your condition is less likely to be cancer so an seeing an oncologist would not be my next step.

Could be either. Just wait until the pneumonia clears and get more pictures. Since she doesn't smoke less likely to be cancer.
