Dietitians (that's how it's spelled) help people work out diet plans to lose weight or in accordance with specific health problems that have dietary implications such as diabetes, kidney disease, celiac sprue, etc.

My wife is a Dietitian for a state psychiatric hospital.

In the USA, Dietitians are licensed through the American Dietetic Association. Dietitians are the only fully qualified nutrition experts recognized by the health care profession.

Some people call themselves "nutritionist" without having any real qualifications, but that's not the same as a Registered Dietitian (RD) or Licensed Dietitian (LD) who has the authority to work closely with medical doctors in a hospital or other health care setting.

I'm trying very hard to ignore the answer about "dietitians are for really dumb people." Somebody could have diabetes and kidney disease and not have the education or judgement to make informed choices about what to eat. Dietitians are not just for people who need to lose weight.

Dietitians and nutritionists plan food and nutrition programs and supervise the preparation and serving of meals. They help to prevent and treat illnesses by promoting healthy eating habits and recommending dietary modifications, such as the use of less salt for those with high blood pressure or the reduction of fat and sugar intake for those who are overweight.

Dietitians manage food service systems for institutions such as hospitals and schools, promote sound eating habits through education, and conduct research. Major areas of practice include clinical, community, management, and consultant dietetics.
