Yes, geletin is ALWAYS from bones.

There are products that do a similar job as geletin, these are NEVER called geletin.

If it says Geletin, its dead cows or pigs.

Yes, marshmellows are gneerally made with geletin, there are specific veggie and vegan versions but you have to hunt them out - not from a normal candy shop.

There are a million and one things made with geletin.

Gelatin can be made up off bones (usually hoofs of animals) or hides of animals, like beef hide. Gelatin can also be made from a sea vegetable called agar, but usually homemade jello made by a vegan would use this, not a company selling products in the grocery store. There is geltin in many things, including jello, pudding, some yogurt, and even coated over some vitamins.

Yes, all gelatin is made from animal products. And yes, marshmallows are made with gelatin, so they, too, contain animal products.

It actually isn't marrow--it's made with the stuff hooves are made out of, which is sort of like human fingernails, and there are some other animal by-products in gelatin. So no, if you are a veggie you won't want to eat it.

There is a type of marshmallow that you can make at home that isn't made with gelatin, but it does have egg whites in it. It also doesn't taste like regular store bought marshmallows.

Just so you know, many, many candies also contain gelatin in one form or another. My best friend is a vegetarian, and she is really good about reading labels, and there are a bunch of candies she won't eat. For example, some red licorice has gelatin in it. If you are grossed out by the idea, you might want to read labels very closely, and familiarize yourself with the other names they use for that type of thing. That way you won't eat anything you don't want to.

Good luck ;)

It's not generally made out of bone marrow, but ground up hooves and the like.
And it's in most jellos, marshmellows, quite an array of candies and as a coating on alot of medicines/vitamins/supplements.

There IS a vegetarian option for gelatin, it's called agar agar and it's made from seaweed, there is also stuff called carageen and it's used to stabalise shop-bought milk-shakes and mousses, that is also made from seaweed. It comes in powder form in little tubs from the health food shop, and I think to use it's about two teaspoonsful to a 1/2 pint of liquid - something like that anyway

Yes, if the ingredients says "gelatin" there is a slaughter by-product in it. Pectin and agar perform the same gelling function and you will sometimes see them used; they are plant products. Check the labels of all your foods. Gelatin is everywhere: in candies (starburst, for example,) marshmallows, and many brands of sour cream (especially the "light" ones.)
