Probably the nearest major climbing region to Vancouver is Squamish. See Wiki article. There are over a thousand routes in this place, many of them easy routes for beginners as well as expert routes. See Rock article. If you are a beginner, you need an experienced partner or instructor to help set up the equipment for your protection. You could take climbing classes, I'm sure there are many in Squamish. The next link is for Canada West Mountain School. If you are climbing by yourself with no training, do some bouldering and don't climb far from the ground. And one more thing: You'll need to get a pair of rock climbing shoes, it's almost impossible to climb effectively with boots or tennis shoes.

There are tons of great resources online that are free for you to use to learn about climbing. For example http://www.rock-climbing-for-life.com has some great sections on their site where you can gain knowledge.

You should also check out a local gym or guide service for finding more information about routes that you could do in BC.

Be sure that when you do climb the route no matter how easy it is you understand what you are doing or are with a very experienced climber.

Join the your local section of the Alpine Club of Canada. For a very reasonable membership fee you get gear, instruction, outings. Really the best way to go if you don't know someone to teach you.
