My mom has just found out that she has type 2 diabetes. Now, she isn't sure on what foods she can or can't eat. Does anyone know of a site that I can go look at to see what foods are good and aren't good. thank you so much. I really appreciate it.

The two standards for diabetic diets are exchange list, and glycemic index (newer research), with lots of room for variation between the two. There are also websites with menu plans that are complete and quite good.

However, your mom should have been referred to a dietician/nutritionist/diabetic educator/etc. by her doc when she was diagnosed. Since she wasn't, I'd suggest calling the doc back, getting a referral, and thinking about switching docs.

For a diabetic, exercise is just as important as diet. The two together, healthy for anyone, can be critical in keeping her blood sugar within normal limits. It is possible that she would not need meds (pills or insulin) even over time if she follows the proper diet and exercise plan.

When I say proper, what I really mean is, the best plan is one specialized just for her and supervised by her doc. Getting info. off of the net, while good info. if taken from reliable sources, isn't quite as good although it is very handy.

On soda - stay away from NON-diet soda. "Sugarless" or "diet" soda is fine (although there is new research debating this).

Good luck! (:

I am writing to tell you what an incredible impact these methods had on my life! I have had type 2 diabetes for 27 years. For me, the worst part of this horrible disease is the severe pain I constantly get in my feet. The pain is so bad that I avoid standing and walking as much as possible. I've got to tell you that within the first month, my feet stopped hurting altogether and I can now walk totally pain free.

Believe it or not, I even danced at my niece's wedding last month, something I have not done in a many years. I've been following the book for six months now and my blood sugar is well within normal range. I feel great!

I recommend you use the Type 2 Diabetes Destroyer to naturally reverse your diabetes.

I have type 2 diabetes. I started off with control by diet, but it didn't last (I have a sweet tooth), so now I'm on pills. You can eat pretty normally, a good healthy diet, but cut down on sugar. Your mum's diabetes clinic should have fact sheets and stuff. Here in the UK there is lots of help available. Googl;e "Diabetes" and you will get all the help you need. Hope this helps.

The American Diabetes Association states that a Type 2 diabetic needs EXACTLY the same kind of diet that everyone else is encouraged to eat. See the first link below.

That is, a wide variety of foods, including a lot of fresh fruits and vegetables, lots of fiber, and 30% of your calories from fat, equally divided from saturated (such as lard), monosaturated (such as olive oil), and polyunsaturated (such a vegetable oil.)

This isn't new. They've been saying this for at least 15 years, and possibly even longer.

The American *Dietetic* Association has a complicated diet plan that calls for "exchanges" and such. These folks don't know what they're talking about; they haven't bothered to read the research. You should *ignore* any such plans, and if someone tries to give you a "Diabetic cookbook", you should toss it in the nearest wastebasket. It's trash that could be dangerous to your health.

My dad was just diagnosed with Type 2 diabetes as well a little less than 3 weeks ago. He is taking the drug Metaformin. You can contact the American Diabetes Association and they will send you literature on what your mom should and should not eat. Definitely she needs to stay away from soda. That was the first thing my dad stopped and his most recent bloodwork returned with a much lower reading (first reading of his sugar level was a 290. Was very scary.)

She should take a diabetes education class. They are usually available at local hospitals. Have her ask her doctor about therm. She will learn what to do and what to eat and how much. It's not the actual foods -- it's how much and when. Her insurance may cover it, and she will get the opportunity to talk to a dietitian and get a meal plan for her personally.
