Several years ago, I was told by a doctor that I had a "flapping heart valve". Now, I am kinda worried that the two are related. I am 48 years old. Has anyone experienced this type of medical diagnosis? I won't know anything until after the test on Monday, but have noticed of late that I have palpitations and at night when I am going to sleep that I can actually feel/hear my heart beating really hard. Am I just being overly concerned? Thanks for any responses.

Five years ago I was told I had a leaking mitral heart valve, and I had the same symtoms that you are having.
Palpitations when I lay down, feeling my heart beating in my head, breathlessness, fatigue.
This is because the heart is having to work harder to pump the blood through the heart, and some of it seeps back into the lungs.
I must have had it for years but didnt know. Id actually gone to the hospital for something else.
I had an echo annually, to keep a check on its progress. Until a year ago I was told it had become severe, and needed surgery.
I went in hospital July this year and they were able to repair the valve, otherwise it would have been a mechanical valve replacement.
I had the op on Wednesday and left hospital the following Monday.
Its a big operation, but also a routine one, that is carried out everyday.
I am still recovering, but im glad Ive had the operation, as I can now look forward to a long and normal life.
One caution, if you do have this problem, you have a very small risk of a heart infection when you have any dental work done. So make sure you mention it to your dentist, and he will give you antibiotic cover.
Its actually a common heart condition, so good luck.

Well I was born with a congestical heart disease called Tedralogy of fallot with interrupted aorta.
Nevertheless, I still have a murmur even so I had three surgery's. YOu should not worry, if you have a professional adult cardiologist in your state, you are in great hands.
If you are not statisfied with your cardiologist ask always for a second opinion. That led me to my now 16 year of seing this cardiologist. And I am very thrilled with the technology that is fast advancing. Good luck to you. I hope that helps.
Well, another thing you could do drink some warm milk I do that on a regularly basis. Mix two spoons of honey in it. It usually calms me and my heart down. I would refrain from smoking and drinking alchol. I would ask your physicians more serious question, if you are not statisfied with the answer, look for a better one.
