Depends. Indoor climbing is very safe as all the variables are taken out and you will always be caught be the rope. However, outdoor climbing is dangerous because so many different things can happen, and your life is often in the hands of your belayer. If you fall, and you belayer isn't paying attention, then your screwed. Also, bolts may fail, rock may break, or if your setting up an abseil or preparing to lower from the top of a climb many things can be done wrong.

So yes, it is a dangerous sport!

There's many different types of climbing and any of them can be dangerous if not done properly. If you do it right some styles are almost completely safe, like top-roping, sport climbing and bouldering.

In the mountains and any multipitch or trad climbing, there are alot more inherant risks and hazards that are harder to predict, so it all depends on the choices the climber makes.

Well, I've skiied and climbed rocks for years. To date, while skiing I've busted my ribs twice, wrecked my shoulder, my knee, my thumbs, and probably have almost busted my neck. But so far I've only slammed my butt really hard while rock climbing. Yes, rock climbing can be very dangerous, but there's a lot you can do to minimize the danger through experience and caution. I will also say that falling rock is a frequently underestimated danger, so be aware of where you are climbing, and wear an hard hat when it calls for it.

I'm as rescue climber. I have saved many lives and picked many dead fallen climbers who are not where they are supposed to be. Is it dangerous? It can be deadly!
