My doc said my cholesterol was a little high at 150. She said it is not that bad, but because of high blood pressure and my father dying at 63 after two cardiac surgeries, she would like to put me on a cholesterol lowering drug as a precaution. Is this something anyone else has been advised to do?

You should not go on meds for a cholesterol reading of 150...that is actually pretty healthy. Why not just follow a low-cholesterol diet and exercise? It's so much better to get a grip on things like that naturally. Start eating oatbran and soluble fiber..it will help rid your body of cholesterol naturally also.
Eat less cheese, whole milks, butter, eggs, fatty meat and the skin on chicken.
Eat oatmeal, Kashi, Cheerios

I was on cholesterol meds (Zocor) for a year with no problems, and they lowered my cholesterol level almost 100 points...woohoo!, right? Then suddenly, every bone in my body started aching like I had the flu. I went to my doctor and she took me off the meds immediately. She said the body aches were a serious side effect (in some people) of statins, and what was happening was, because cholesterol meds are so hard on the liver, sometimes the liver stops filtering wastes effectively, and the body aches are actually from toxins "seeping out" into the muscle fibers. Within three days of stopping the meds, I was back to 100%. I couldn't believe how quick the recovery was.

Viv, About a month ago my Dr. put me on
SIMVASTATIN 20 MG tablet for high cholesterol.

My reading is way higher then yours and has been for years. I was never on medication because the good for outweighed the bad. I was always on estrogen but am no longer. The danger of medication to lower cholesterol means watching the liver close. That scares me. I am going to ask to be taken off of it and in the meantime I am really going to take every measure to lower it myself through a better food plan & more exercise & that means less computer. I have 180 emails now to look at. I got so many in over night. I may have to just delete a lot of the forwards.
Bev, I will not tell you what to do but if you are good at reading between the lines, you know. 150 I think is great. If you smoke or drink, it would be to your advantage to stop. I have never did those 2 things. My problem is strictly diet & exercise.
Follow the good advice you get here & you can heal thy self.

I have to say that I have never heard anyone consider a cholesterol of 150 high. Usually doctors don't worry unless it's over 200. Are you sure that's your total cholesterol?

This is truly frightening. It seems that the benchmark for becoming another victim of statin poisoning is getting lower and lower. The pharmaceutical companies will not be happy until they have 99% of the population on these drugs. I for one will be part of the other 1%. I would not take these pointless and dangerous drugs under any circumstances
