Guinness is a meal onto itself. It has long been touted as beneficial to health (especially for pregnant women) and a good source of iron. But, the proof is in the pudding, here is some comparison:
"Iron content of various foods/drinks:
Iron content (mg)
1 pint of guinness
0.3mg
100g ready-to-eat apricots
3.4mg
100g ready-to eat prunes
2.6mg
1 egg
1.1mg
bowl of weetabix
4.2mg
bowl of porridge (40g)
1.6mg
3 oz grilled lamb chop
1.9mg"
To supplement dietary iron, it would take quite a bit of Guinness; sounds like a fun way to go.

Guinness is not vegetarian, it is fined with isinglass.
I know thats not an answer to your question but i thought i'd point that out seeing as though it was posted in the V&V section
It is true though that many convents ( Catholic obviously ) have guinness as a "pick me up". Our local convent definately did as they used to offer em a glass when i cut thier grass. They said they were allowed to keep it for it nutritional value.
Looking a the figuers in the first answer i wouldn't describe it as a good source fo iron, compare it to weetabix or a single egg...the iron content of Guinness is just a fraction

As Fish Fry pointed out, very little iron in Guinness.
However, most will lecture you about how Guinness is not vegan, and it isn't in MOST cases, but the Extra Stout made in North America is vegan friendly.

Company email 1:
Our Consumer Relations department has informed us that the Guinness Extra Stout product that you will find in the North American market does not contain isinglass. I hope this is the answer you were looking for. If you have any other questions, please do not hesitate to ask.
Company email about everything else:
Thank you for taking the time to contact us and for your interest in Guinness Draught nutritional information. In reference to your inquiry, isinglass, a fish product, is used during the clarification process as a magnet to get rid of excess yeast. To the strict Vegan, this would be an animal product and unsuitable. I hope this helps. Once again, thank you for contacting us.

I would wager Guinness is not popular for it's iron content. It is quite popular as a "tonic" to ward off al sorts of things. I feel a sniffle coming on--I do believe it is time for a pint.
Oh for goodness sakes, Mikey ---a little bit of isinglass can't be a jot and tittle as offensive as a vegetarian like yourself that sells your hay to people who kill cattle to sell to meateaters! What about that, lad?

Don't laugh, my doctor put me on a high iron diet for my iron deficiency and recommended I drink Guiness Stout. It's bottom barrel and seemed to work combined with other high in iron veggies.
The alcohol content is quite high...so one bottle per day is quite enough to increase the iron count.
It tastes like iron...unless it is chilled quite cold. Drink it in a glass glass. Don't drink it out of a can. It has a very metal taste if you do.
I noticed you are vegetarian...so you can really supplement your iron with things like lima beans, collard greens and spinach also.

I didn't know that, but I'm not too surprised because Guiness reminds me a little of molasses.
Molasses is very high in iron, by the way.
