Hi all, I am about to hire this chef to bake a baby shower cake for my friend's shower but I'm not sure if $50 is too much or not? The chef will deliver the cake to the party which is in the same city, the cake will serve 20 people and it's just a basic cake with pregnant belly on it. So is $50 a reasonable price for such an easy cake with just a fondant made belly and dress?

Thanks everyone... I'm just starting to realize how dumb I would be to drop half of $100 on a baby shower cake for my friend who forgot to take her pills for 3 days. And I'm only 21 and about to graduate... I'm sure she'll have more children so thanks for helping me see the light!

That is a really good deal! Usually, these cakes START at $3 per serving (and that is considered a gift/free cake!!!)

Is the pregnant body on a 1/4 sheet cake? Then is is definitely a good price. The belly is made out of a large egg pan and the chest is made out of mini wonder molds. In essence it is actually 3 different cakes. If you think the price is more than you want to pay, why not consider making decorative cupcakes. I've seen cute ones that look like the face of a baby crying. I'm sure a web search would give you more cupcake ideas.

That is nice of you to have a baby shower for your friend. I would think that her parents would want to help out. Also the fathers mother should also help out. The child will be their grandchild. They can not expect you to do it all. Your friend may have sibling who are willing to pitch in and help. A good party always involves lots of food. You can get a nice size cake at a grocery store bakery. Or go to a super wal mart. Or even make cup cakes and frost them and put sprinkles on them. Have the family each bring a dish. Enough to feed about how ever many people are invited. Since your the one hosting the party you are in charge. So I would put together a list of food and designate people to bring this or that. Even if she has other close friends they can chip and bring something for the food. Then you could go to a dollar store and spend some money on baby paper plates, cups and napkins. You should not have to do this a lone. So I would have both mothers bring a dish, have other close friends bring a pot luck dish. I do not find anything wrong with this. For my sister baby shower. I had it, I got the help of friends and family to pitch in with the food. Since the shower is for the mom. The mother to be should not have to help out. Do not forget the games. Here is a good game. You buy baby food in jars, many kinds. and you take off the wrapper, and put a number on it. So you know which is wich. Then you pass around each jar and each perso has to write down and try to guess what is in the jars. It is not as easy as you think. Then whenever someone won a game. They had to pin a big cloth diaper pin on their shirt. The games can be a lot of fun. Good luck.

Ouch. That is high. And it only feeds 50. Around here for that price you get a cake that feeds 120 people... Maybe the person making it figures only 20 pieces because the pregnant women might have a craving for more. OK

Shop around. Cake prices vary due to size, ingredients, type of frosting, and work put into decorating.

These days yes it is. My grandparent's plain 50th wedding anniversary cake was over $50. I think it was about $95.

You could get one much cheaper at your local grocery store. I wouldn't pay that much. I think I paid about $20 for a real nice one at Safeway. I had to pick it up myself though.
