It is normal to have some amount of vaginal discharge. The vagina is self-cleansing, and there is a small amount of mucus secreted by the cervix that helps to keep everything lubricated and helps keep germs from reaching the walls of the vagina (like mucus in your nose protects you from germs entering that way). Normal vaginal discharge is usually clear or whitish, and has little or no odor. It's usually thin, like the mucus in your nose. Clumps of whitish discharge along with itching can be caused by a yeast infection.

Yellowish, greenish, or brownish vaginal discharge that has a foul odor is usually a sign of a vaginal infection. It doesn't HAVE to be an STD. There are other bacterial infections that can occur because of the overgrowth of certain naturally occurring bacteria in the vagina, and they don't always have to be introduced by sexual intercourse. They are still infections, however, and need to be treated, regardless of whether or not they're STD related.

Yes, a certain amount of discharge is normal, as the vagina sheds cells and mucous regularly. Some women need a light pad or something like that for it. It's nothing to worry about, and no one can tell it's there, including your little brother the imp.
