I've seen people who are "vegetarians" eat junk food, like french fries, and chocolate, and chips. Are these foods really allowed on a vegetarian diet?

I've thought about it, but I know I couldn't give up my chicken. I would have no problem with the red meat, I very rarely eat it now, and man the thought of giving up junk food.....
But I want to be healthier too.

Inevitably, we all make our own rules. For instance, if you are a vegetarian for health reasons, you might not be eating those french fries, whereas if you were a vegetarian for ethical reason, french fries might be ok. I knew a vegetarian once who ate deer meat that he had hunted and killed. It was ok for him because he was a vegetarian because he felt that the ranching system was very hard on the environment, and that we are the only real natural predator for deer in north america, so eating a controlled number during a specific season was fine in his particular brand of vegetarianism. Ultimately, if you are a vegetarian for 6 and 2/3rds days and have chicken one day a week, the vegetarian police wont come and take your vegetarian card away. When it comes to these things it is your own personal ethics and ideals that define your own personal vegetarianism.

As long as there is no animal products in these things, it's all up for grabs. I mean, it's kind of counter-productive if you've gone vegetarian for health reasons to be doing these things, but many go vegetarian for ethical reasons, and although it may not be the best diet, they eat these things. Besides, I think almost everyone pigs out on junk food from time to time, being vegetarian does not mean that you have to eat entirely healthy 100% of the time.

I am not a vegetarian, I eat fish and chicken.

Junk food, in moderation, will not hurt you. But, once you give it up you are going to find it does not appeal to you anymore. I can't even stand the smell of french fries.

Foods become acquired tastes. This applies to junk foods, and healthy foods. After you modify your diet you will find that those things are what appeal to you. I gave up salt awhile ago and about gag if I accidentally eat something that was salted. Everyone else likes it, so I know it is me.

Sure, you can have all the junk you want, as long as it doesn't contain animal products. I'm a vegan and I have an almost crippling addiction to fries, onion rings, etc. Luckily, I eat very healthy the rest of the time and am equally addicted to working out, so I'm ok. Enjoy your junk (in moderation) if that's what you're into.

Yes. You can eat crap on a veggie diet. Just most vegetarians choose not to because being vegetarian is a healthy life style.

Sure, why not ?

A vegetarian is someone who does not eat meat, fish, poultry not slaughter by-products.

So long as those junk foods exclude the above you can eat as much junk as you like and still be vegetarian

Some are veggie for health reasons, some for animal rights, some for religion.

Well, I have seen a lot of other vegetarians who just eat junk food, and they usually end up dying of over-dosage of cholesterol. They are no healthier than normal people. I personally love junk food, but only eat it with a bunch of fruits and vegetables :p

As long as the foods don't contain animal ingredients, why wouldn't they be? And I easily find vegan chocolate, too.

Not everyone is vegetarian for their health. Or they consume "naughty" foods in moderation.

occasional junk food is ok, but whether you are vegetarian or not but eating balanced food consisting of protein source, carbohydrate. fruits and vgetables etc. helps!

Certainly. Vegetarians just don't eat animals. They'll eat things from animals like eggs and milk but not the animals themselves.

Just eat as healthy as you'd like to and don't worry about what anybody else thinks.
