It depends on your depiction of energy. Before coal and fossil oil etc we used to burn wood in order to get heat and to cook and in some early steam locos as well timber was burned etc, natural oils such as olive oil could be used for lighting, mills were run using water power or wind power even good old horses or cows would be usd instead of tractors etc, as a race we got by OK without fossil fuels. Peat was also burned but I think this would be under the fossil fuel banner and is not very enviro freindly as would be tar. If you mean before the generation of electricity then quite simply, there was nothing of any consiquence to generate, hat would have been generated would have been via human power, rathe lkine your old dynamo on your pushbike, any serious generation of electricity had not been developed before the discovery of fossil fuels en mass.

Timber is NOT a fossil fuel and does not have the same effect as burning fossil fuels, however the d-forestation of the planet is having disasterous effects on our eco system, hence the screwed up weather.

Hope this helps

We used horse, donkeys, ox. We did the thing ourselves, we used to walk more, ride on horses, if using boat we used the paddles or the wind to help. Some people in very sunny countries used the sun energy, for drying meats, cleanings clothe warming up etc. Using the current in rivers and sea in conjuctuion with the winds. In colder places peoples used rooms or little tower to preserve the ice. We cooked with logs, and trees and also keep warm this way. And in some countries in other parts of the world, people are still using many of this!

Animals were used to provide a lot of the work.

Some of the things were done by humans and there was also quite a bit of wood burning going on.

Life was a lot worse back then than it is now though.
