I am also 20 too, and I know what you are talking about. I think what you're talking about is palpatations, which are caused by stress and anxiety. It actually does sound like you're having panic attacks...it's okay, I do have panic disorder, but with medication and cognitive behavior therapy, you can get through it.
But first get in to see a cardiologist just to make sure your heart is healthy. If they can't find something wrong, please keep your mind open to the possibility of panic disorder.

I recently had similar pains and found this information (link) as below. I was already scheduled for a phsyical, and while I'm still having several things checked out, the Dr. told me that she agreed I may have been having Costochondritis.
If you're otherwise healthy, it is worth checking this out.
But you didn't mention any family history, or if you're overweight.
I have palpitations in the middle of the night, but not too much after heaving housework, home improvements, exercise etc.. I know it's confusing.
I had a heart murmor as a kid, so does my cousin, and I will be having a "halter monitor" put on me soon. I had that test before and I was told I just have an irregular heartbeat. It can also be "mitral valve prolapse" and sometimes that neccessitates medication.
I did have my mom pass away 5 month ago, and my husband is always stressed, so I am.
But I understand your panic about it.
Good luck.

These pains could be a number of things besides your heart. And I assume if you have had them for 7 years, that it's most likely not. It could be panic/anxiety attacks (I used to have those, and I thought I was dying- even hyperventilated a few times and was taken to the E.R.). It could be asthma or bronchitis (you don't mention if you are a smoker, but that can aggravate both of those conditions). It could also be that you are lifting too much or incorrectly (e.g. overloaded backpack), which can cause extreme upper back pain from strained muscles, and often feels like it's in your heart, and can definately knock the wind out of you when the muscles cramp up. By the way, none of these things that I mentioned are even similiar to the pains I had with acid reflux or severe heartburn.

Oh wow, just like me. I always think that something is wrong with my health. Think about it, if you never had this in your family history, heart problems, what could it be?? When i was 16 i used to get the worst headaches, my heart would jump out of me, and i would get very dizzy. We went to the doctor and he said that everything is okay, everything is stress realated. We came home and i don't know what i did, and it went away. Now i'm 23 and i get that, feel dizzy and tired, i stay up nights to study, again went to the doctor and it's stress and lack of sleep. He said as long as you think that something is wrong with you, you'll stay like that forever. I'm telling this to you so you see that you're not the only one and this is my experience with the similar situation. Maybe you could have anxiety, which is normal and you can get over. So just get it out of your head, don't think about it. However, i'm doing much better now, and i try to keep it out of my head. It's just pshycological, and i was told that it's easier to heal physical problems than pshycological. Now i'm not saying we're crazy but it's all in our heads, we are fine. Deep down i think you're fine for your age. I hope this help. Good luck, stay healthy and stay active.

It is particularly not likely that it's some thing critical. Most most likely clarification is a muscle cramp or another musculoskeletal obstacle. Acid reflux or different esophageal disorders can motive ache like that, so if you are having heartburn signs that would warrant watching into. It is obviously viable that there's anything else happening, like a congenital center illness or pulmonary high blood pressure or anything, however that's tremendously not likely.

It could very well be stress, heartburn, or acid reflux, especially if you've had these pains since you were a child. However, by all means get a second opinion. I'm surprised your doctor didn't order the GI scan to check for GERD. You might want to ask him/her to refer you to a radiologist to do the tests.

Yes... if this is heartburn, there are feelings very similar to symtoms of a heart attack.. But, you could also have anxiety attack problem too!
Maybe you could go back to the doctor and tell him or her your concerns.
Good Luck!

it's stress. You need to learn breathing exercises. If you breathe in slow, and deep, and let it out slow, you will INSTANTLY, lower your heart rate.
