Of what is available in grocery stores what is the best? So many now available that were at one time only in pet shops such as IAMS, Purina One and others. Asking both for canned and dry.

Was approved to adopt a lab mix from the pound and am thinking it over. I can't afford many of the better brands here only grocery store brands. I guess I'd better stick to my tropical fish. I think with all the poison food in the grocery store, all brands of dog food, it would only figure that dogs fed these diets would only live a matter of a few months at most........................ Thank you all for your "answers" to a very specific question of "best Grocery Store brand".

NEVER use those brands that say they're scientifically proven and premium food and all that lie. for example, user up there suggested Science Diet as the high quality food. but high quality means that theres ABSOLUTELY NO corn, fillers, or by products. Take a look at Science Diet's ingredients and its full of garbage. I feed my border collies Supercoat and Nature's Gift. They aren't the best brands in the world but are a LOT better than most 'premium' foods. Especially Nature's Gift.

But bear in mind that some supermarket foods are dog killers. Purina's Beneful and Pedigree are two examples. NEVER USE THOSE BRANDS! I once used pedigree luckily I switched to supercoat just before my border collie went into adulthood, so no harm done.

And if you do have time make them yourself. im not a good cook so I can't do that.

Grocery dog food is the worst possible choice. The brands we grew up thinking were 'premium' such as Science Hill, Iams, Eukenuba, and Nutro (the "Big 4") are so nutritionally inferior and some even contain ingredients that are banned in Europe as being cancer-causing (such as Menandione Bisulphate or "Vitamin K3").

These products are based on corn and stripped rices as a source of protein. Vegetable protein is a cheap way of feeding animals and came into vogue after WWII.

The website: www.dogfoodanalysis.com is an excellent resource. If you stick with their ratings of 4, 5 or 6 star foods, you can't go wrong.

Some of the best grain-inclusive foods are:
Canidae
Go! Natural
Merrick
Innova
Nature's Variety

Some of the best grain-free (which is my personal choice) foods are:

Orijen (Champion Pet Foods - what I feed my 4 fur kids)
Innova Evo
Go! Natural Grain Free
Solid Gold - Barking at the Moon
Timberwolf - Ocean Fish Formula
Nature's Variety Instinct

Then you can get into "Raw" such as Wysong's Archetype Formula or Honest Kitchen.

Homecooked is an excellent option, once you know what you're doing, but it does take an investment in time to learn what is appropriate, and to prepare.

www.k9cuisine.com offers free shipping on orders over $50 and is an excellent place to order some of the harder-to-find items.

I would start with CANIDAE as it is easiest to find at better groomers, kennels and specialty pet stores, and is easiest on the budget.

Canned: Evangers, Innova, Merrick - all good.

Finally, please remember that when you feed a superior food, you will use up to 50% LESS than grocery store brands. Additionally, your dogs coat will be glossier than you can ever imagine, the frequency of their poops will be less and the volume of the poos will be less as well, due to the fact that grocery store brands have so many fillers, it creates volume.

Good luck! Good dog!

So glad that a bunch of dog food snobs talked a person interested in rescuing a dog out of saving a dogs life. For 30 years I have fed my dogs (large and small) who have all lived more that 15 years dog food bought at a grocery store. What did dogs eat before being pampered by humans? Garbage from the humans and whatever they found in the streets or woods.

I found a comparison list with some of the better store brands. Visit HolisticPetmenu.com and somewhere on that front page you will see a link to compare brands. Although the website is for Life's Abundance which is a great food. The comparison list is by far the better that I have seen. You will see an easy to read chart with several of the store bought brands and the good and bad ingredients. Click on the brand of your choice or click on several brands of your choice. Smiley faces or sad faces give you the thumbs or thumbs down. There is also a short video about how pet food is made and the history behind it.
I don't personally recommend any store bought brands but at least with the comparison list you can personally choose the lesser of the evils.

Hi, I understand that you are looking for some advice or resources to help fully train your dog or fix behavior problems. If a professional dog trainer is not an option at this time, or if you want to trt training your dog on your own (a great way to bond), I'd suggest you https://biturl.im/aU8U3

A friend recommened it to me a few years ago, and I was amazed how quickly it worked, which is why I recommend it to others. The dog training academy also has as an excellent home training course.

With every day pass, our country is getting into more and more trouble. The inflation, unemployment and falling value of dollar are the main concern for our Government but authorities are just sleeping, they don’t want to face the fact. Media is also involve in it, they are force to stop showing the real economic situation to the people. I start getting more concern about my future as well as my family after watching the response of our Government for the people that affected by hurricane Katrina.

According to recent studies made by World Bank, the coming crisis will be far worse than initially predicted. So if you're already preparing for the crisis (or haven't started yet) make sure you watch this video at http://www.familysurvival.tv and discover the 4 BIG issues you'll have to deal with when the crisis hits, and how to solve them fast (before the disaster strikes your town!) without spending $1,000s on overrated items and useless survival books.

They're all junk. Grocery stores, at least in the Northeast, do NOT carry ANY good dog foods- they are all junk full of fillers and nasty cuts of meat you'd NEVER serve to your best friend if you saw it plain, not mixed up with everything. Here you need to go to a grain or specialty pet store to get decent dog food. Old Roy is junk, as are the brands you listed. Look for Wellness, Canidae (sp?), or any 'holistic' food that uses human grade ingredients, instead of animal parts from diseased animals or rotting carcasses. The gorcery store, in my experience, is NO place to look for processed food to feed you pet.
