As a MTV generation kido, i grew up in the cusp of an environmental attitude change that seems to swing back and forth like a pendelum. (Reagan to Cater Bush to clinton to Gore oh i mean Bush again and again...) It is time to turn the page folks unlike our dear mis imformed Leaders I KNOW that our resources are NOT infinite! As a culture we pretend that there are unlimited resources and even more unlimited places to bury the stuff when we are finished with it. It is time we wake up as a culture and realize that reducing, reusing, and recycling are the true three r's that need to be taught in our society today and may i add a fourth R to the equation, this is rethink.. we need to rethink our policies and actions, the time for acting like an ostrich with his head in the sand is over lets hold our heads high and be fully aware of our actions. WE DO LIVE ON A SUBSTAINABLE PLANET IF WE WOULD ONLY ACT RESPONSIBLY what is your ideas to get people to RETHINK and make real changes .

It should only be optional to the degree that acquiring the stuff in the first place is optional. I'm not sure people are mentally prepared to deal with it yet but circumstances will reach the point where there truly is no choice in the matter. There just aren't enough raw materials to continue making new junk and throwing it away every couple of years.

Yes it should be optional, because If it wasn't it would cost the government too much money to enforce it. Another thing is if something is in the recycling that shouldn't be the whole lot gets rejected by the recycling plant, if every idiot was forced tov recycle against their will they would probably put the wrong things in it and everyone's recycling would be rejected.
We just have to encourage everyone that it is the responsible thing to do and hope that they will comply.

It should be a mixture of education as well as legislation to make recycling something that becomes second nature to every one of us.
Those living in denial should be humanely recycled!!

Landfill workers need to make a living. Imagine a landfill worker's hungry wife and children when he says he got laid off because everyone was forced to recycle. Will you feel good then, will you?

no, recycling shouldn't be optional, but the real challenge would be finding a way to feasibly mandate it. you can't monitor everyone's trash without some serious logistic hangups. however, businesses are easier to monitor, because of the volume of waste they produce, and there are currently programs in place in canada to mandate recycling in businesses.

Well the operative word is "sustainability" which we are nowhere near now and I that is what we need to get people absolutely aware of first then teach them how and what we need to do it.
