I have a VIERA TH-42PX7A (Plasma 42inch) and I bought a Geforce 8800 Ultra, but when I connect my pc up to the TV it won’t go above 1024 @ 768 resolution! Why is this? It surly should be higher than that? It also doesnt look the best quality wise, I thought it would look nice!

I connected it via the AV cables (not s-video and not through the direct pc connector) is that the problem?

It won’t go above 1024 X 768 resolution because it's plasma panel only has 1024 X 768 pixels. That's all it has, it will never display a higher resolution.

It's not clear what you mean by "AV cables". If you meant composite cables, they will never send an HD signal. To send HD video to your TV you have to use component, VGA, DVI, or HDMI cables.

Yes, you should use VGA to connect to the TV if it's supported.

The problem is that the standard A/V cable and s-video cable are not capable of supporting resolutions above 320x480i - yes, the very same as your standard non-HD TV channel. So, your computer has to downscale its picture, which then gets upscaled (stretched) by your TV, resulting in the not-so-pretty-picture you're seeing now.

For anything higher, you need to use component video or HDMI or VGA. For connecting a computer, VGA is best since most TVs' VGA input is optimized for use with a computer.

Because that is your TV's native resolution. Whatever signal you feed it the TV will downconvert it.
