I had bad acne when I was a kid.

I went to a dermatologist. It was 1972. He told me, in 1972, that chocolate and french fries have *no* effect on skin. 34 years later, I *just* heard the truth finally getting announced on Tyra. 34 years later. It takes so long for real scientific facts to make it to the masses.

Milk and dairy products, however, *will* cause your face to break out, even if it's all natural, all organic from cows you grow at home. There are steroids in milk, naturally occurring, and ingesting lots of milk and dairy products *will* cause your face to break out. You *need* calcium as a kid, so make sure you get it in non-dairy supplements.

Avoid dairy products (but make sure you get calcium and protein in other foods and supplements).

Getting a large tube (45 grams) of tretinoin cream and using it daily, as prescribed, will be less expensive than wasting money on all the fad creams you see on tv and in newspapers and magazines. You can find real tretinoin cream in a 45 gram tube for as little as $50 from reputable pharmacists, but you'll have to shop around. The common price is $80-$90. A 45 gram tube lasts 4 - 6 months on the short side--it lasts me 6 months and I use it on my face*and*chest daily. A 45 gram tube lasted me nearly 9 months when I was not applying it to my chest. It takes about 6 weeks for your skin to completely settle w/tretinoin, but once you get used to it--it's a miracle! (Back when I was first diagnosed w/acne in 1972 there was no such thing as Retin-A; only strong versions of drying lotions and creams (benzoyl peroxide) w/topical corticosteroids, and tetracycline prescriptions -- Retin-A (tretinoin) takes the place of *all* that, *and* tretinoin totally *works*. Get it in a 45 gram tube, not the 15 gram tube, and despite the fact it seems expensive--compare to how much you'd have to spend on the other stuff that really doesn't do the full job.

If you are female, a few birth control pills will help keep your complexion clear because they balance an estrogen-type hormone with your testosterone-type hormones. Breaking out in zits is the result of an *influx* of testosterone. Yes, girls have testosterone. Boys have estrogen, too!

Of course, clean your face daily.

Only put lotions/creams/soaps/preparations on your skin that are NON-COMEDOGENIC. Some substances--for example lanolin--will contribute to clogging pores. YOu can try to do your own research, but if you have a dermatologist, ask for a list of *comedogenic* substances, that way, before you buy an item you can check to see if it has comedogenic things in its ingredients. If so, don't buy it/use it. It will increase your acne breakouts.

Yes, there *are* acne preparations that contain comedogenic substances. Noxema used to be one that claimed to help you have a clear complexion, but if you checked the ingredients--you'd see. Although their ads claimed to help improve complexion, it did *not* have "non-comedogenic" anywhere on its label. They may have changed their formula since 1972, but back then, my dermatologist told me to quit using it. I think it had like 4 or 5 comedogenic things in it, and I did always break out worse within a few days of having used it.

When a substance has "non-comedogenic" on it's label, you can purchase it knowing it won't clog your pores and thereby worsen your break-outs.

Anything that prompts an influx of testosterone (this includes sexual activity (even just making out), as well as the normal female menses cycle) will also prompt an acne outbreak.

Stress can induce an influx of testosterone.

That stuff about chocolate and french fries making you break out is *wrong*. Ask any licensed dermatologist.

So:
1.) Cut out dairy (but get calcium from a supplement!)
2.) Clean your face--but be careful not to be too harshly abrasive or drying. (overly dried-out, Irritated skin is more prone to break-outs.)
3.) Use tretinoin, if you're not allergic or otherwise indisposed.
4.) Use a noncomedogenic moisturizer w/sunscreen (tretinoin makes you sensitive to sunlight! Make sure the sunscreen/moisturizer you use is non-comedogenic).
5.) Try to keep your stress level low.
6.) Take precautions, when possible (obviously girls can not control their menses rhythm!), to prevent influxes of testosterone, but if you do have some kind of increased sexual activity, be sure to stay on top of the tretinoin, and especially avoid the dairy.
7.) If appropriate, consider taking birth control pills known to help with complexion (some of them make acne worse--do your research!)
8.) The zits show up a couple weeks *after* stressful or hormonal events.
9.) Keep your hair away from your face.
10.) Sometimes doctors still prescribe antibiotics (e.g. tetracycline)
11.) Always use only NONCOMEDOGENIC preparations on the skin that is prone to acne and blackheads.

If you're breaking out b/c you have a new boy or girlfriend, once your relationship with that person becomes stablized, so will your hormones, and the break-outs will stabilize, stop.

I'm not sure how effective OTC preparations w/retinol are. I know they are effective (retinol is a tretinoin derivative), but much slower acting and weaker than even the weakest prescription topical tretinoin.

Hope this helps.

For real, that stuff about chocolate and french fries causing acne/blackheads is a myth.
For real, that stuff about dairy is the truth.

Good luck. I *know* acne sucks, personally.

(Yay, topical tretinoin!)

Genetics & hormones play a big part in whether or not a person gets lots of pimples but there are things that you can to do help prevent them.

Diet and exercise is one of them. If you live a healthy lifestyle your skin will thank you for it.

And then if you have a skin cleansing routine that will help also. Get some good quality face products.. Personally I love Dermalogica, Clinique are also good. These can get quite expensive though. There is a great brand that you can get from most pharmacy's and chemists called Cetaphil which is more reasonably priced and designed for skin conditions such as acne.

Cleanse and moisturise the face twice daily. Morning and night. Use an oil free moisturiser if you tend to get oily skin. Use a face scrub once or twice a week to get rid of the dead skin cells that build up and can block your pores sometimes causing pimples. If you stick to the routine you should see an improvement and a reduction in break outs.

Good Luck!

The betnovat-c is one of those topical corticosteroids that Saluda Rapids mentioned. The use of topical steroids in acne will help eliminate/reduce inflammation. It will *not* prevent comedones from forming, but it will help take away swelling and redness.

Tretinoin specifically works by changing cellular growth in the pores, making it act more like it did before puberty.

External dirt and oil do play some role in aggravating acne, but the real reason one has acne has to do with physiological actions taking place at the cellular level. The lining of the pores aren't able to clear the area as before. This is why even if you keep your face spotless, washing a million times a day, if you have acne, you will still have it.

The only way greasy foods would cause you to have more acne would be if you physically rubbed the greasy food on your skin and did not bathe afterwards.

The greasy food = greasy skin notion is from the same book of knowledge that instructs blood donated by people with dark skin and kinky hair can not be given in transfusion to people with light skin and silky hair or vice vera. It is just NOT true. For those who claim, "oh no! I know for a FACT I break out if I eat greasy food," please understand that there are white people who will suddenly become "sicker" if they find out they received blood from someone of a different "race." It's in your mind, get over it. If you are allergic to a certain food, that's one thing--just as if one receives diseased blood in a transfusion--but acne is not an allergic reaction, and diseased blood can come from any race. Or if you eat greasy food when you feel stressed, when you break out it's from the stress effects on your endocrine system. You would break out regardless what you ate.

I think medical science has known for more than 50 years that greasy food does not cause acne. I don't know why it's so hard to get people to accept this fact--but then, on the same page, I guess we're still fighting racism, too, huh?

Chocolate is actually good for you, especially dark chocolate, and good quality dark chocolate even provides a small amount of iron, so eating chocolate before your period is a very good thing for you to do for yourself. Other compounds in chocolate provide a mood lift, so eating some chocolate when you feel down is also a very good thing.

Because chocolate actually helps relieve some of the negative effects of menstruating, women tend to go for chocolate around their periods. When they have acne because of the hormonal shift of the menses, if they *did* happen to eat chocolate during this same time period, they might mistake the chocolate for causing the zits when it was actually testosterone. Sad, breaking up with a boyfriend, here comes the chocolate and potato chips, then the zits--but the zits are from the emotional stress, not the food. Other side of chocolate, you have a new boyfriend who is all romantic, giving you chocolate treats, and you're also kissing/making out/etc. Again, it's not the chocolate causing you to break out--it's the rise in your testosterone from heightened sexuality (whether or not you are engaging in sexual intercourse).

Rub fresh garlic on and around pimples. Pimples will disappear without a mark with regular applications.

Mix 1 tablespoon groundnut oil with 1 tablespoon fresh lime juice to prevent formation of blackheads and pimples .

Apply fresh mint juice over the face every night for the treatment of pimples, insect stings, eczema, scabies, & other skin infections.

Apply a paste of fresh fenugreek leaves over the face every night for 10-15 minutes and washed with warm water. This will prevent pimples, blackheads, and wrinkles.

Im sorry but i totally have to disagree with the girl before me!! Absolutely do not pop your zits this may work and look good for a day or so but popping zits pushes some of the pus furtherdown into the skin making them return later on rather than clearing them up!! Second wash your face at least 4 times a day!!ù Third do not touch your face and do not let other touch your face because doing this causes the oil and muck in the skin of your hands to transfer to youre face!! If wearing makeup there is a special type of makeup you can wear that doesnt clog the skin i forget the name but you can ask at your local pharmacy and they will kow what youre talking about, also do not sleep with makeup!! Also do not forget to moisturise, some people dry there skin really badly trying to clear up pimples without realising thatthey need to mosturise, moisturising is an important part of your daily skin routine but make sure that you use a oil free moisturiser, they are very easy to buy !! Dont believe what everyone says about chocolate making your skin break out, this has been proven to be a lie and your diet does not affect your skin at all if any!! What causes youre skin to break out is that you have dirt and stuff clogging your pores which causes the body to try and clear it out and thats we the puss and stuff comes from!! Your bodys ability to clear skin depends on everyone some people are just lucky to have clear skin!! If you are like me try he basic acne products and if the do not work maybe go for the PROACTIVE option!! yes proactive like the adds that are on tv all the time!! Im not trying to promote their product but i struggled with acne for years and all the products i tried were useless but proactive believe it or not cleared me skin up within three weeks and i have now been usonh it for 2 years!! So just remember the things i told you and good luck
