These people risk their own lives to save ours. What do you think their Jail sentence should be? I fly a Company Aircraft and have had this happen to me. Take off and landing are the most dangerous times. It is not only the passengers onboard but those along the runway, just doing their job that are in Danger. Let us put these Idiots away for a long time.

Cowboy, You have a better knowledge of this more than I. You Guys fly "Death Patrols" everyday. I take my hat of to You and your crew.

Hi Ted, So right. They should be taken up at night and let them land the Sucker. Bet their little pants would be brown, no matter what colour they were on departure.

I am with you on this one Al, Not sure what a fitting punishment would be.

All I know is that I have as much respect for those types of people as I do for people who chuck rocks at cars off overhead bridges.

They are oxygen thieves... robbing good people like you and I of the air we breathe.

Where did it happen? Were the pilot, passengers, crew, and ground staff O.K?

EDIT: Applause for Cowboy above me.

Absolutely there should be incarceration for these maggots... I just wonder, is it kids that do this type of thing? (Not that I am trying to infer that kids should not be locked up if they are maggots.) Just reckon their parents should get a fair kick up the rear end as well.

It is possible; however unlikely. No one thing ever caused a crash, but a laser pointer combined with some other problem, however minor, may be a link in the chain of events which causes a crash. For instance, perhaps one pilot is incapacitated (a heart attack, maybe) and the other pilot has low experience, landing at an unfamiliar airport, then takes a laser to the eye on short final. He attempts to go around but the engine spool-up is slow and the airplane touches off-runway in a bad way... crash. Highly unlikely; but then again what are the odds of birds taking out two engines simultaneously over the Hudson (US Air 1549); or two aircraft colliding in mid-air (about 12 events in the past 20 years, the worst of which between a 747 and Il-76 in India). Some reports of laser sightings have crossed my very desk, one such event actually did cause temporary blindness to a pilot. He was uninjured, but sent to the hospital as a precaution. Other airlines have been reporting similar such occurrences. Again, extremely low probability of causing any sort of incident, but the trends are extremely disturbing.

There are too many crimes like this that seem to attract a slap on the wrist for the idiots who commit them. A bit like the dimwits who throw rocks onto motorways. It is high time there was a mandatory sentence for these acts that even an idiot would think wasn't worth it. Even if they didn't get it before they did the deed they would have plenty of time to think about it. It won't happen though because the legislators are more concerned with the perpetrator than with the victim who may be a promising youngster who will spend the rest of their lives suffering brain trauma. Doesn't make sense does it?

It makes you wonder if these little idiots realize the harm and danger this activity poses? I don't recall ever hearing much on the news about the effects that playing with these lasers can have. Maybe a national campaign of information would be helpful (and stiff jail time for offenders).

I hear ya. I fly for law enforcement at 500' AGL. We've been hit by lasers a few times and it helps when we flip down our NVG's , but the initial burst does hurt.

The other thing we think of, is this just a kid's laser or is a rifle attached to the laser.

I'd like to see some jail time for this. People that do this know what they are doing.

I agree, they are complete idiots. I don't think that gaol time would do anything. What I would like to see is these people doing community service - let them do some work for the emergency helicopter or the Flying Doctor and see how important their work is and how stupid what they have done is.

Stupid little idiots without any idea of the consequences they need to be taught a lesson just like rock throwers and arsonists no matter what age they are.

Yeah, the little pricks. We should cram them all into a cessna 172 and send them out over some rocky terrain at night time then blind them little pricks the laser to see how they like it.
