My 80 lb dog still thinks he's a puppy and tries to jump up and nip, does anyone have any experience or success with these alternatives to shock collars? The shock thing seems so harsh. :(

If you can't train him to not jump and nip, then no collar will do it for you.
It isn't that hard to train him to sit on command.
There is no effective gadget for that, just common sense training and a little dedication to making him a good canine citizen.
Here is a good video: training your dog not to jump: http://video.google.com/videoplay?docid=-5190644864491635447&q=dog+not+to+jump&total=241&start=0&num=10&so=0&type=search&plindex=3

It doesn't really matter what method you choose, but that you stick with it, and it will be effective.

i don't know about the vibrating collars, but can tell you about the training collar with the shock a little bit. We have a cocker spaniel puppy who still is in that "puppy doesn't like to listen phase". Well last week she almost got hit by a car running into the street as we put her leash down for a second to pick something up. We've tried everything so far and nothing works other than keeping her on the leash 24/7. Anyway, a neighbor suggested an electronic collar and we tried it. I bought one that has a range on it - you can set it from 1-10 and it also just has a beep on it. We tested it on ourselves before ever putting it on her and found that 3 is a good little zap to us (without all the fur she has) - 1 and 2 did nothing and 3 was a bit like licking a 9-volt battery (if you've ever done that). 4 hurt me too much, so we plan on using it set to 3. It's a quick zap that just gets her attention more than anything. We always hit the "beep" button first to get her attention and if that doesn't work, then the "zap" button. We've only had to use it twice and now the beep works. I dunno - people say it's cruel to the dog but i know people who spank their kids when they misbehave - postivie reinforcement only goes so far and i'd rather her get a quick zap then hit by a car. I guess it all depends on perspective. I hope that helps you with your hunt.

Not really the same thing, but a couple of months ago,my old dog started barking constantly every morning, from around 6am to 8am like clockwork.
Nothing would stop her...petting her, feeding her, letting her go for a run outside.
The vet found nothing wrong with her, just said it was probably a neurotic symptom of old age.
So i got her one of those collars that make a high pitched beep everytime she barks. It's meant to train her into not barking when she hears the beep.
It's been 6 weeks since i got the collar, and she pays no attention to it at all! She's still barking every morning!

So,in my experience, those kinds of contraptions don't work.
They could work for your dog though.
Maybe he's just a hyper, happy dog? Thats why he jumps.
Or you could take him to a dog trainer - thats better than a shock!

Training is hard and very time consuming. If you have any doubts i would go to classes or do a lot of reading and do it yourself. The biggest thing is consistancy. even with a collar if your not consistant it wont work. But remeber its worth a try but i suggest training proffesionally expcially if the dog is older.

Good luck

Enroll in an obedience class.

Teach your dog to sit, make him sit-stay before petting him. He can't jump on you if he is sitting.
