The Eurostar trains from Venice to Rome take about 4.5 hours and cost 51 euros for 2nd class. There are also intercity trains for 40.50 that take about an hour and 15 minutes longer for the trip (more stops). There are several trains throughout the day. There are also night trains where you can get a berth, sleep through the night, and arrive early the next morning.

Trains will run through the Christmas - New Years period; obviously, they'll be running on the holiday schedule on the actual holidays.

You can check specific schedules and prices on the Italian train website; the schedules and prices are adjusted in early December: http://www.trenitalia.com/en/index.html

There are express trains that run from Rome to Venice several times a day. I would suggest an overnight trip. You leave Rome around 9:30 pm and arrive in Venice around 8:30 am. If you have a first class sleeping car, you enjoy a private cabin and coffee/croissants in the morning. You can also reserve sleeping berths which will save you some money. You get there refreshed and don't lose a day traveling.
If you want to travel by day the express trains (ES) take about 5 hours Rome-Venice. - a first class ticket w seat reservations for two people runs about 215.00 dollars. Trains w more frequent stops will cost less.
