Homecoming around the time football season starts, and is usually set in fall. It's for everyone in the school, and a time that Homecoming queen/king is selected. Prom is a gathering for juniors, and seniors only--unless you are a date. It's the seniors last dance, and it's based on them. It's usually held in spring.

Homecoming and prom are very similar. Basically they are excuses to have dances. Homecoming is a general celebration where alumni of the school are invited to revisit the school ("come home") and participate in activities. Often there is a football game and a dance. This usually happens near the beginning of the school year. Prom usually happens at the end of the school year, and it's typically the most formal dance.

Homecoming is just to get you warmed up (the guys) and meet new girls. HC is a little more casual than prom. Prom is the BIG dance. Extremely formal and many people choose to lose their virginity at prom. It seems to be a fad or something.

homecomming is just a dance, nothing formal, normally in the fall, prom is normally in the spring, and a formal dance for upperclassmen, no freshman or sophmores (unless dating someone older).
