The time difference between the USA and the UK is largely dependent on your location within the USA. Because the States are east of the Greenwich Meridian, all US time zones are behind UK time.
For example, the time difference between London and New York is currently -five hours, for example, at 10 am in London, it's still only 5 am in New York. But with daylight saving kicking in at the end of March this will change to -six hours for all Eastern Standard Time areas.
Pre-daylight saving in London, the time difference is -four hour for Atlantic Standard Time, -six hours for Central Standard Time areas, -seven hours for Mountain Standard Time, -eight hours for Pacific Standard time, -9 for Alaska Standard Time and -ten hours in Hawaii.

In addition to the different time zones in the US, some states have daylight saving during the summer, whilst others don't.
It does get confusing, I deal with Arizona from the UK, there is a 8 hour time difference at the moment. No daylight saving in AZ, BST in UK, This difference will change to 7 hours when UK changes to GMT in a few weeks.

I have just got back from the usa the time difference is they are 5 hours behind us

11:43 PM in California and the whole west coast, 12:43 AM around Arizona, 1:43 AM central time (Texas, etc.), and 2:53 AM in the East coast.
In California there's an 8 hour time difference, for central time a 7 hour difference, and so on.

There are 3 time zones in America. New York is 5 hours behind, LA is 7 hours behind, anyhtng in the centre is about 6 hours behind.

i have a cousin that lives in California,
the time difference's is eight hours
so it's 07:15 here
therefore it's 11:15pm
in California
we're eight hours in front of them
