When I minimize windows they vanish, how can I fix this?

I'm using my using my friends lap top and ever since someone was messing with it the windows don't show up on the task bar when they're minimized (they're there but they don't show up, you have to open the task manager to actually pop them up again.)

If you can help it would be much appreciated !

The taskbar may be on AutoHide. Right click a blank area on the taskbar and select Properties and see if Auto-hide is checked.

Check for viruses/spyware using well known programs from download.com
