It's a good idea to smoke outside the house, because the smell of a cigarette is probably a bit stronger than most smokers realise.
If you can. move away from the door so the smoke doesn't blow back in, or close the door.
I smoked for many years and know how relaxing it is to have a smoke if you only have a short break, but nowadays people are very aware of the health risks, so it's best to avoid potential problems if at all posible.
Best wishes :-)

People who smoke are desensitized to the awful smell of stale smoke. In fact, smoking deadens both taste and smell, so that one of the joys of quitting smoking is finally tasting your food! Because of this, smokers often don't realize how much their smoke bothers many nonsmokers, even weeks after they've left. If the smoker has the grace to go outside, surely it's not much of a further step to move a few feet downwind.
I have to wonder, though - are you really the smoker? Or the other person? I'm not sure how much the 'elderly' part matters, especially as you're asking this under 'etiquette' rather than 'health,' unless the person in question has respiratory issues or is truly frail. As a rule, although secondhand smoke can be a health issue, that's mostly in people who are trapped in rooms with heavy smokers for many many hours, primarily bar workers or family members of smokers, and the damage occurs over years. The amount that would blow back into a house wouldn't be nearly enough to directly cause damage unless the nonsmoker is frail or allergic.
It is awfully rude, though.

I do smoke and have for many years. When I would visit my parents or someone who didn't smoke, I'd be respectful enough to go outside away from their area [back yard or somewhere] and smoke out there.
If that meant it was 1am, freezing cold and windy or even raining, it is MY habit and didn't want to be rude to the other people. I will still change my position to 'downwind' when enjoying another's company to not have my smoke bother others. It's called being polite. Just make sure you can get back in the house, bring some keys! LOL !
[ Besides, the smell clings to anything in the house.]

For a person who doesn't smoke, the smell is often quite noticeable. These days now that we know about the health problems that can be caused by secondhand smoke even the smell of smoke makes me nervous sometimes. So I would rather that the person smoke elsewhere so it doesn't go into the house.

Not good, and not happy, and its also very thoughtless. An old person can be easily made sick by smoke. Move well away from the door before lighting up. I think at least 20 feet or so. Better yet, don't smoke on their property.

Esp with an elderly not very happy esp if asthmatic or have any respiratory problems.
Depends on the owner if he/she will be forgiving esp if the first time it happened but it would be inconsiderate to do so and more so if you continue.
At least you had some thought about it as some ppl don't even care how it might affect someone else.

They won't like it. The smoker should go far away from the house to smoke.

Honestly, I would find it really unpleasant. You should stand outside and close the door behind you while you smoke. :-)
