He has been toilet trained since he was 3 years old and hasn't been too bad, but instead of getting better he seems to be getting worse. He doesn't completely wet himself to the point of having to change clothes but he always has big wet patches at the front of his underpants that sometimes go through to his clothes. I am really frustrated and embarrassed at times when all his friends seem to stay dry. Is he just lazy or could this be a medical problem?

Why don't you have him wear padded underwear like Gerber cloth training pants so the wet stain doesn't show through on his clothes. They're just like regular underwear but thicker in the middle. They sell them at stores like Wal-Mart, Target, K-Mart and Shopko.

Go with him to the bathroom and find out if he pees on himself before or after he's using the toilet. If he is peeing on himself before using the toilet then he's waiting until the last second to pee. If this happens after he uses the toilet then he should learn to shake it dry before pulling his pants back up. My guess is that he is holding it in until the last second to pee so he can play a little while longer. That would be more typical 4 year old behavior.

He may also have a UTI (urinary tract infection) if he never use to do this and suddenly the wet stains just started happening. It's harder to hold it in if you have a UTI. I would make a visit with his pediatrician to check for an infection.

Pediatricians say not to worry about bed wetting until they are like 6 or 7! Never promise a treat if he stays dry. He is NOT doing it on purpose. By promising a prize you are giving him a sense of guilt and shame when he cannot comply. He's already trying to hide it by covering it up with blankets. Poor kid. My son will be 5 next month. He wets the bed still, probably 3 times a week. This happens if he falls asleep too early and I didn't have a chance to make him go potty before bedtime. Or if he has something to drink later than he should. But, I do not make a big deal out of it when it happens. If you put to much pressure on him to "fix" something that he may not yet have control over, it might delay his progress. I do praise my son when he is dry, but I do not look or act disappointed when he is not. He knows that accidents happen and it's not the end of the world. Hang in there! He'll get it! First, he has to know he doesn't have to hide it. I have thick cloth mattress pads that are washable to protect the mattress. No diapers. Diapers make him feel like a baby and not a big boy. Diapers are punishment. I do not punish when he is not doing anything wrong.

MY SON TOO!!! I am told by other parents of boys that this is pretty normal, as is the enormous amount of pee surrounding the seat after each use (drives me nuts). I have tried to make sure I go with him and get his pants down all the way so he can do his thing and not hit his close, but it's almost like a fire hose and it goes everywhere no matter what I try! Then there is that lovely little wet patch on his pants...no matter what I do.

I have started to get him to "shake". I'm a single mom and I have no idea how a boy is supposed to pee. I've even tried to get him to wipe with a toilet paper...he has no interest in that.

I'm told that they will figure it out as they grow up. Guess we'll both have to hang in there and hope it's true. Good luck!

All kids mature and grow at different rates. You can take him to the doctors and ask their opinion just to make sure he is okay health wise. I have never had children, but from experience with my friends children it could be a number of things. Change in a child's atmosphere or life in general causes them to start wetting the bed again, it can be as simple as a move to a new house or as drastic as family problems. Just be patient and work with him.

One of my friends put up a poster in her home and everyday her children don't have an accident they get a gold star or a sticker of their choice on the board. After so many stickers they get a prize.

One person I know did the poster idea, but also used the incentive that if they are accident free they will get to go to preschool. That helped alto because the kids really wanted to go!

He may be over excited, nervous or feel pressure from you, if you keep making a big deal about it it may take longer for him to get control of the problem. He may just be in a hurry to get back to whatever he was doing and instead of 'shaking' when he is finished he just pulls up his pants in a rush. If he stays dry through to night then it doesn't sound like he has a medical problem.
Good luck, and try to relax about it.

NO kid is lazy, first of all.
Now, it could be he have a problem so go and take him to the doctor or it could be that he is nervous about something that is going on in his life. If there is somebody who is botherign him, or maybe there is a situation in ur family that is making him feel nervous... So OPEN ur eyes very wide, and make sure everyhting is ok aroung him. Maybe somebody is not treating him good in school or something

My little brother does the same he just doesnt want to take a break from what he's doing so he wiggle's and hop's to hold it in, until he cant hold it anymore then he just wet's hisself.
We found out a way to get him to go, it might be alittle cruel but it sure helped.

Tell him to go when you notice him skipping, or he's going to explode.

Worked for my 4 year old brother. =]

Give the little guy a break... these things happen, and it's nothing for you to be embarrassed about. He may just be in a hurry, or just does not want to take the time to finish the run-off. They grow out of it eventually.

Talk with him, but don't belittle him.
