There are different sorts of meditation techniques which will involve different parts of the brain and different overall patterns of brain functioning.
As others have mentioned above, one frequent characteristic of many meditation techniques is a relaxation. So you often see more alpha rhythms and sometimes theta, which are associated with "restful alertness."
You can also see other things, especially in advanced meditators, like thickened areas of the brain linked with somatic sensation in meditators who practice mindfulness of physical sensations (makes sense, it's like they are especially exercising that part of their brain function).
You can also get differential patterns where there is more activity in one side of the prefrontal cortex than the other, which as been found to correlate with states of bliss.
In my opinion (I've done LOTS of meditation), it doesn't much matter if the things you experience are from "some kind of spiritual being" or just biochemical processes. To tell you the truth, I don't think we understand either one of those things at all well. What matters to me is how sober and honest and humble and meaningful my experiences are.
After all, the "ordinary" biochemically generated experiences of waking, dreaming, and sleeping, are also amazing.

You are putting your mind to rest, when your body is fully functioning. This causes the mind to relax, what you are experiencing is the brain shutting down, so you can go to the next level of meditation. Meditation if done correctlly will give you as much rest as a full nights sleep.
Blessed Be.

You dont meditate for a spiritual being, you meditate for self enlightenment and realization. Clear your mind, I think of a black peice of construction paper...

It enters into the same mental state as if you were in the fourth stage of sleep. It causes your mind to physically rest while you are awake, this level of sleep is typically maintained for about thirty minutes thorughout a night's rest and is alternated to the most common stage of sleep, the third.
Meditation actually casues you to have better cognitive functions, because it rests you brain as much as a full nights rest.

it's the shutting down of the parietal lobe. It's the region of the brain responsible for the sensation of personal identity. It's the same thing that happens when people say they're having religious experiences.
