There are basically three benefits:
a) German is still a major language in basic science and research. if you are going into physics, chemsitry or engineering, German would be a plus;
b) German was the dominant language of philosophy and culture in the 19th century, and can give you access to Kant, Hegel, Heidegger, Nietszche, as well as Goethe and Kafka;
c) Knowledge of German helps you travel in Germany, Austria and Switzerland, three of the most beautiful countries in Europe;

The answer to your question is quite simple: the more languages you know (including German) the more you will learn about the world. Why not start by learning German now, good luck!

You can go to Germany with your friends who do not speak or read German, and they have to eat what you order for them, unless your "Ober"(waiter) speaks English. a plus is that Anglo Saxon German + French Latin = English, so it is basically half of what you already speak. A good thing about any language that most of the people around do not speak is that you can get around saying stuff in that language that you would not say in your own, but that is disrespect full of the language.

Blessed Be.

Learning a language is like a gateway to a particular country's culture, history, arts & sciences. You will find German to be a very rich language. I learned it many years ago and have never regretted it.
