We are moving to Wichita and will most likely settle in the NE part of the city. We aren't a fan of "day cares" or preschools that essentially function that way. We would like to know about preschools worth visiting in that part of town or perhaps a little bit outside of the loop.

I think your best bet is to visit the schools and centers and trust your own judgment. Contact the elementary schools, social service agencies, and churches as well as checking the phone book to compile a list of programs in that area. Then call those programs and ask what curriculum they use, what credentials their teachers have, and what schedule the children follow. Be sure the schedule allows time for both structured and unstructured activities, and outdoor play time. Then visit the programs that appear to meet these criteria. Observe a class in progress and watch for cleanliness, routine, teacher/child interaction, and see if the children appear to be happy.
